Connecticut native, vocalist, pianist, and composer Nicole Zuraitis won a Grammy in 2024 for Best Jazz Vocal Album, for her CD How Love Begins. I have to admit I didn't know about this until recently, when I discovered that Samara Joy didn't win three in a row! 

Let's have a listen to a song from that Grammy-winning CD:

 

The word is that she is quite an entertainer when performing live. Fittingly, her new CD is Live at Vic's. Near the end of the second hour you'll hear Jimmy Webb's famous tune from the CD, the song that Bob Dylan called 'the greatest song ever written,' the song that musicians love for its unusual, complicated harmony: Witchita Lineman.

Speaking of hearing a live performance, you'll be able to do just that on Friday August 22, by joining WICN for our 8th Annual Jazz+ Live event. This is an outdoor concert in downtown Worcester, behind the Hanover Theater and directly in view of the WICN offices at 50 Portland Street.

The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Musician's Corner: Tania Grubbs Air Date: 12/22/2024 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET LISTEN TO THE SEGMENT HERE   Vocalist Tania Grubbs has released her second album, The Sound of Love . When I looked at the song list, I was reassured and impressed upon finding Duke Ellington's Sound of Love . Her take on this song is masterful. During her Musician's Corner interview, she will talk about two songs on the new CD, Tadd Dameron's If You Could See Me Now , and an original composition entitled The Sculptor's Hands .  What I noticed about Mrs Grubbs is that she finds new ways to express standards from the Great American Songbook. So I was watching one of the Rick Beato videos where he talks extensively about Pat Metheny. Well, that got me excited to review our Pat Metheny collection, and when I came upon a couple of really beautiful tunes - perfect for your contemplative morning - I knew I had to use them to open the show. Today's show will open with the complete version of one of those tunes - The Road to You , the title number from Mr. Metheny's 1993 release. After receiving an email asking about this and some other tunes that I use as openers, I decided. Why not do an hour of just openers?
