Musician's Corner: Mafalda Minnozzi & Paul Ricci

Good friends of WICN-FM 90.5 vocalist Mafalda Minnozzi and her music director, producer, and guitarist Paul Ricci will talk about their latest CD, Riofonic, on the next edition of the Sunday Jazz Brunch. 
 
If you are a regular listener you might recall that  they have appeared a few times live in Studio 50, both times broadcast during the show. Now we have an audio piece produced by Mr. Ricci that will air between 10am and 11am ET during this Sunday's show.
 
Included will be a discussion of the different beats incorporated into some of the songs - not all of which use the famed and irresistable bossa nova beat that we all love. But here we have something that uses African rhythms, and I hope you will find this exciting and informative.
 
Both Ms. Minnozzi and Mr. Ricci will guide you through several songs from the CD, which by the way features the great Brazilian composer and guitarist Roberto Menescal. Also, there are quite a few other famous Brazilian artists  included on the CD, all of whom are described for your educational pleasure!

Let's Talk: Alan Broadbent Air Date: 8/29/2021  With the release of his latest CD Broadbent Plays Brubeck , pianist, arranger, and composer Alan Broadbent solidifies his place as the foremost creator of orchestral jazz today.    Wow, that is a big statement, but it is true. I am not sure of the label, however. "Orchestral jazz" seems too narrow for Mr. Broadbent's expansive vision that melds string orchestra with piano trio into a jazzy but classical kind of sound. I guess if you like comparisons, you might consider George Gershwin. But his music also calls to mind Charles Ives, maybe Aaron Copeland. Now you can add Dave Brubeck to the list.   The only way to understand my inadequate words is to listen to the music. When I looked at the song list, I was reassured and impressed upon finding Duke Ellington's Sound of Love . Her take on this song is masterful. During her Musician's Corner interview, she will talk about two songs on the new CD, Tadd Dameron's If You Could See Me Now , and an original composition entitled The Sculptor's Hands .  What I noticed about Mrs Grubbs is that she finds new ways to express standards from the Great American Songbook.
