Musician's Corner: Lori Bell

She was nominated for a Grammy in 1983 for Best New Artist, and again in 2002 for her self-titled CD released on the Beeswax label.

It is with the latter CD, Lori Bell, that this story begins, for me anyway. That's the first CD from the artist that entered our library, and the first music that I heard. Wow! Honestly, I had never heard flute playing like that, so smooth and mellifluous,  the band exceedingly tight, the sound engineering excellent. A great CD - I remember playing it quite a bit back then.

Several CD releases later, we now have her latest project: Recorda-Me: Remembering Joe Henderson. 

The CD features top-flight west coast musicians - Josh Nelson on piano, David Robaire on bass, and Dan Schnell on drums.  In particular, pianist Josh Nelson is quite well known and much in demand, deservedly so. 

These Musician's Corner interviews have been great as a learning experience. One of the things I learned here is how complicated and challenging Joe Henderson's music is. It's all in the harmony, as Mr. Henderson is known for his unusual chord changes.

Nontraditional chord progressions is a theme in Ms. Bell's new release. During the interview, you'll hear how she took some of Mr Henderson's ideas to put her own stamp on the nine songs on the CD, while staying true to the original style of the music and the artist.


Another challenge for Ms. Bell was to find the appropriate key for any particular song, so as to allow her better access to the 'meat' of her instrument, since the songs were originally written for  tenor saxophone.

During the interview, you'll hear a breakdown of the title number, Recorda Me. She will discuss how she created an introduction to the song, and how she wrote a special arrangement as accompaniment to the drum solo near the end of the song.

I'll also be playing a few tracks from other releases, including that first one I mentioned. To open up the second hour, you'll hear her perform a James Taylor song with Ron Satterfield on guitar and vocal.

Four or five names pop up on Wikipedia, mostly violin players who also happen to occasionally play viola. Add to this, over the many thousands of CDs I have listened to during my tenure at WICN, I do not recall ever coming across a jazz viola player.  Until now.
