Sometime in the 1980s, when Apple and Microsoft were building software and growing like crazy, the term Tech Evangelist was born. This was and is a person who has the goal of inspiring others to adopt a technology or idea. 
 
Now I would like to coin a new use of this phrase: Jazz Evangelist! Because that is how I would describe my next guest on Musician's Corner, Mark Morganelli. 
 
You see, Mr. Morganelli doesn't just play jazz. Not that there is any 'just' in playing jazz, and certainly not in playing it well, as Mr. Morganelli does.
 
More than that, what he does is inspire people to love jazz, to want to listen to it, to want to play it. To be involved in the best of the genre. 
 
And how does he do that? Let's summarize: 
  • Owned two jazz clubs in the heart of New York City, and now he runs a third (Jazz Forum Arts - JFA) in the pastoral upstate town of Tarrytown.
  • Was the music coordinator of a well-established jazz club in the city (Birdland).
  • Produced over sixty records and CDs, forty for the prominent jazz label Candid.
  • Produced a large number of paid and free summer arts jazz concerts in and around the NYC area, New Jersey, Massachussetts, and Connecticut, including over thirty free annual summer concerts still running, sponsored by JFA.
  • Offers free childhood music and jazz education at JFA
  • Sponsors monthly open jam sessions at JFA.
  • Presents jazz related visual arts at JFA.

That's quite a background in bringing jazz to as many people as possible! And this is even before talking about his work as a professional trumpet/flugelhorn player. Not to mention his love for and immersion in Brazilian jazz, which we all love so much.

The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Musician's Corner: Tania Grubbs Air Date: 12/22/2024 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET LISTEN TO THE SEGMENT HERE   Vocalist Tania Grubbs has released her second album, The Sound of Love . When I looked at the song list, I was reassured and impressed upon finding Duke Ellington's Sound of Love . Her take on this song is masterful. During her Musician's Corner interview, she will talk about two songs on the new CD, Tadd Dameron's If You Could See Me Now , and an original composition entitled The Sculptor's Hands .  What I noticed about Mrs Grubbs is that she finds new ways to express standards from the Great American Songbook. So I was watching one of the Rick Beato videos where he talks extensively about Pat Metheny. Well, that got me excited to review our Pat Metheny collection, and when I came upon a couple of really beautiful tunes - perfect for your contemplative morning - I knew I had to use them to open the show. Today's show will open with the complete version of one of those tunes - The Road to You , the title number from Mr. Metheny's 1993 release. After receiving an email asking about this and some other tunes that I use as openers, I decided. Why not do an hour of just openers?
