Musician's Corner: Mark Winkler

On the next edition of the Sunday Jazz Brunch, my musical guest is vocalist and lyricist Mark Winkler. Born and raised in the L.A. area,  he is known on the west coast for his work as a live performer. In this interview, of course, we'll be talking about Mark's recorded work, specifically his new CD The Rules Don't Apply.

While we know him as a vocalist, he is also an accomplished lyricist. He has written lyrics for tunes by such composers as Wayne Shorter, Dexter Gordon, Joshua Redman and David Benoit. 

For the new project, Mark wrote lyrics for eight of the original songs on the album. He also included five of his favorite tunes written by Paul Simon, Lennon and McCartney, Eddie Arkin and Lorraine Feather, Donald Fagen, and Randy Newman.

It is said that Mark comes from the tradition of Bobby Troup, but he has been compared also to Mark Murphy, Kurt Elling, Dave Frishberg, and Michael Franks.

Mr. Winkler will discuss two songs from the new CD, the title track The Rules Don't Apply, and Jazz Swings.

The title track was not originally conceived as the New-Orleans-style tune that you'll hear. As Mr. Winkler explains, the creative process between composer and lyricist can be surprising in so many ways, as is true for this song. You'll hear all the details.

The second track, Jazz Swings, had an interesting inception, during a lull in Mr. Winkler's schedule. He describes how a certain groove came to him, referring to Count Basie's great rhythm guitarist, Freddie Green. You'll also hear how the switch from saxophone to clarinet during rehearsals resulted in a change in the lyrics. So interesting!

The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Musician's Corner: Aimée Allen and Love's Crescendo Air Date: 5/28/2023 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET LISTEN TO THE SEGMENT HERE One song. Two arrangements.  On the next Musician's Corner you'll hear a beautiful, meditative song called Love's Crescendo , with melody written by Turkish jazz artist Fahir Atakoğlu, and lyrics written and sung by vocalist Aimée Allen. It is a delicious collaboration.   During this segment, Ms. Allen talks about how Mr. Atakoğlu played the song for her on piano while singing wordless melody. Stunned by its beauty, she agreed to write words that express the profound feeling the melody induces. The subject could only be one thing: love.  Her words are not about romantic love specifically - rather, it is universal love that she wishes to convey to us, the listeners.
