Musician's Corner: Judy Wexler

LA-Based vocalist Judy Wexler has released seven CDs during the course of her twenty-year career. She is known for finding great songs that are often overlooked. 
 
This was specifically the goal on one of her earlier CDs, Crowded Heart, released in 2019. I was thrilled to hear the songs on this CD, many of which were somewhat familiar but which I hadn't heard in quite some time. We'll hear a few songs from this CD during Sunday's show.
 
Her latest CD is called No Wonder, and here we are back to favorite Great American Songbook tunes, such as You Stepped Out of a Dream and That Sunday, That Summer - with some exceptions.
 
Two of the exceptions will be the subject of our interview. Ms. Wexler will talk about the title track No Wonder, written and arranged by Luciana Souza, as well as Cedar Walton's Firm Roots (Are What You Need to Win).
  
Ms. Wexler will be appearing on May 1 at Scullers Jazz Club in Boston.

Let's Talk: Alan Broadbent Air Date: 8/29/2021  With the release of his latest CD Broadbent Plays Brubeck , pianist, arranger, and composer Alan Broadbent solidifies his place as the foremost creator of orchestral jazz today.    Wow, that is a big statement, but it is true. I am not sure of the label, however. "Orchestral jazz" seems too narrow for Mr. Broadbent's expansive vision that melds string orchestra with piano trio into a jazzy but classical kind of sound. I guess if you like comparisons, you might consider George Gershwin. But his music also calls to mind Charles Ives, maybe Aaron Copeland. So I was watching one of the Rick Beato videos where he talks extensively about Pat Metheny. Well, that got me excited to review our Pat Metheny collection, and when I came upon a couple of really beautiful tunes - perfect for your contemplative morning - I knew I had to use them to open the show. Today's show will open with the complete version of one of those tunes - The Road to You , the title number from Mr. Metheny's 1993 release.
