Firstly, I must state that bassist Matt Booth's new CD Sun Prints is fine work. It's really good jazz with lots of energy. I knew this from the first spin.

Matt Booth is a bassist, composer and educator based in Durham North Carolina. On this release he plays both upright and electric bass as part of his quintet. 

One thing I found out about Mr. Booth is that he uses the guitar instead of piano to try out compositional ideas. Maybe that is not the first time I've heard this, but typically jazz composers sit at the piano to write songs.

Another item that is interesting are some of Mr. Booth's influences: Nine-Inch Nails and Radiohead. I quickly admit that I know nothing of these bands - hey, I'm just an old guy who grew up with the Beatles before turning to Miles and Monk.  I think this cross-genre pollination is really great and can stimulate fresh new jazz.

The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Gabriel Espinosa: From Yucatán to Tarrytown Air Date: 7/7/2024 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET I'm impressed with the lineup of artists appearing at Mark Morganelli's Jazz Forum in Tarrytown, New York. Recently Gabriel Espinosa performed with his superb band. In the photo above, we see Mr. Espinosa feeling the bass, with drummer Graciliano Zambonin reacting to the groove of the moment. Four or five names pop up on Wikipedia, mostly violin players who also happen to occasionally play viola. Add to this, over the many thousands of CDs I have listened to during my tenure at WICN, I do not recall ever coming across a jazz viola player.  Until now.
