Musician's Corner: Harvie S

Harvie S is a prolific, well-known, and very much in demand jazz bass player. He started out in Boston at Berklee College of Music, and then  played regularly at the Jazz Workshop and Lennie’s on the turnpike. In 1972 he moved to New York City, where he currenly resides.
 
Harvie has been on the faculty at the Manhattan School of Music since 1984 and teaches Jazz Bass and ensembles there. He has performed or recorded with artists such as Thad Jones, Gil Evans, Lee Konitz, Steve Kuhn and Paul Motian. He also partnered with vocalist Sheila Jordan on a number of recordings.
 
Harvie changed his name from Harvie Swartz to Harvie S in 2001. 
 
The new CD, Bright Dawn, is his 21st recording as a leader. We'll talk about two tracks on the CD.

Kim Nazarian Three bands: The New York Voices, El Eco, and Gabriel Espinosa's band. What do they have in common? Vocalist Kim Nazarian. Let's Talk: Alan Broadbent Air Date: 8/29/2021  With the release of his latest CD Broadbent Plays Brubeck , pianist, arranger, and composer Alan Broadbent solidifies his place as the foremost creator of orchestral jazz today.    Wow, that is a big statement, but it is true. I am not sure of the label, however. "Orchestral jazz" seems too narrow for Mr. Broadbent's expansive vision that melds string orchestra with piano trio into a jazzy but classical kind of sound. I guess if you like comparisons, you might consider George Gershwin. But his music also calls to mind Charles Ives, maybe Aaron Copeland. So I was watching one of the Rick Beato videos where he talks extensively about Pat Metheny. Well, that got me excited to review our Pat Metheny collection, and when I came upon a couple of really beautiful tunes - perfect for your contemplative morning - I knew I had to use them to open the show. Today's show will open with the complete version of one of those tunes - The Road to You , the title number from Mr. Metheny's 1993 release. After receiving an email asking about this and some other tunes that I use as openers, I decided. Why not do an hour of just openers?
