The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents

Spotlight on: Leslie Pintchik

Air Date: 11/15/2026 on 90.5 WICN 9am-12pm ET

There's nothing like a good piano trio.

That's my feeling, anyway. When I come across a good one, I stick with it. You'll hear them plenty on the show.

Not many folks have heard of Leslie Pintchik, pianist and composer from New York City. But we have most of her albums. And they are good.

The skill level, it should go without saying, is high, and the compositions are interesting and quite original. And the best thing, is what is true for any trio: hearing the artists 'talk' to each other through the intermediary of their instruments and the jazz idiom. You will hear plenty of that on today's spotlight show.

I hope you enjoy this show with a spotlight on Leslie Pintchik.

Best,

Marty

Let's Talk: Alan Broadbent Air Date: 8/29/2021  With the release of his latest CD Broadbent Plays Brubeck , pianist, arranger, and composer Alan Broadbent solidifies his place as the foremost creator of orchestral jazz today.    Wow, that is a big statement, but it is true. I am not sure of the label, however. "Orchestral jazz" seems too narrow for Mr. Broadbent's expansive vision that melds string orchestra with piano trio into a jazzy but classical kind of sound. I guess if you like comparisons, you might consider George Gershwin. But his music also calls to mind Charles Ives, maybe Aaron Copeland. Now you can add Dave Brubeck to the list.   The only way to understand my inadequate words is to listen to the music. Join me on 8/29/2021 as Mr. Broadbent takes us on a tour of his new release.   The show kicks off with a gorgeous track from Hélio Alves. Then the orchestral focus begins. It's All About The Strings The next few songs feature string or full orchestra...

The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Musician's Corner: Aimée Allen and Love's Crescendo Air Date: 5/28/2023 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET LISTEN TO THE SEGMENT HERE One song. Two arrangements.  On the next Musician's Corner you'll hear a beautiful, meditative song called Love's Crescendo , with melody written by Turkish jazz artist Fahir Atakoğlu, and lyrics written and sung by vocalist Aimée Allen. It is a delicious collaboration.   During this segment, Ms. Allen talks about how Mr. Atakoğlu played the song for her on piano while singing wordless melody. Stunned by its beauty, she agreed to write words that express the profound feeling the melody induces. The subject could only be one thing: love.  Her words are not about romantic love specifically - rather, it is universal love that she wishes to convey to us, the listeners. While the original version of the song appeared on Mr. Atakoğlu's 2020 CD For Love , Ms. Allen liked it enough to include a slightly new arrangem...
