Where does inspiration come from? It does seem rather mysterious. Last week Tony Monaco told us about how inspiration comes from anywhere - it just comes. And I would say that would be the consensus. But still, those of us who are scientifically oriented (i.e. inquiring minds want to know) think there must be some factors involved that we could study and try to understand.

My guest on Musician's Corner this week tells us that there is a good case to be made that love has something to do with it. Any kind of love, be it romantic love, love of humanity, love of country, love of your pet.

Francesco Cataldo is a composer, pianist, and guitarist. In this episode, he tells a story about walking down a street, and something happens. But first - the street is in Sicily, and it is a beautiful day, the sun is shining, ships are sailing on the sparkling Mediterranean sea, beautiful trees line the street. In the trees there are birds, and they are singing.


But there is one bird - a blackbird - that is singing a special song. It has something to do with a close friend named Giuseppe.

Giuseppe, who passed away not long ago, was head of a charity organization where Mr. Cataldo volunteered. 

But more that that, he was a very close friend, who told Mr. Cataldo that all you need is love to solve many of the problems we face. Just like the Beatles song tells us.

It will be hard not to be touched by the story that Francesco Cataldo tells on the next edition of Musican's Corner. Certainly, you will hear the two songs he talks about in a much different way than if you did not hear the backstory. And, as Mr. Cataldo tells us, both verbally and in his music - recounting everything that Giuseppe stood for - it is through love that we can solve our problems.

Four or five names pop up on Wikipedia, mostly violin players who also happen to occasionally play viola. Add to this, over the many thousands of CDs I have listened to during my tenure at WICN, I do not recall ever coming across a jazz viola player.  Until now.
