Musician's Corner: Ted Rosenthal

Regular listeners of the Sunday Jazz Brunch know how much I like a good piano trio. There something very elegant and pure about these three instruments playing together. 

This year we have a bounty of material from pianist Ted Rosenthal and his trio. It is not often that we encounter an artist who has four simultaneous releases. I must admit that I was confused initially when I heard about his follow-on project to a CD released in 2010 called Impromptu, in which Mr. Rosenthal arranges classical works for jazz piano trio. The new CD, titled Impromp2, continues the work crossing over between classical and jazz. 

However, when I got his 'new CD,' it had a different title! So here are the four releases:

  • Classics Reimagined: Impromp2
  • The Ted Rosenthal Songbook
  • High Standards
  • The Good Old Days (to be released Winter 2026) 

Classics Reimagined: Impromp2 features Noriko Ueda - Bass, Quincy Davis/Tim Horner – Drums, with special guests Ken Peplowski - Clarinet, and Sara Caswell - Violin.

“I have performed this repertoire often,” Mr. Rosenthal says, “with my trio, in solo concerts and with trio plus chamber orchestra. I often hear classical themes as being ripe for jazz treatments. Setting these melodies with embellished jazz harmonies comes naturally to me. Finding a satisfying form for improvisation and rhythmic groove
that makes the whole treatment work without sounding forced or contrived is key. I have been playing many of the pieces on this CD for a few years already and firmly believe that as ‘jazz tunes’ they work.”

Mr. Rosenthal and his trio will perform at Tanglewood on November 28.

The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Musician's Corner: Tania Grubbs Air Date: 12/22/2024 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET LISTEN TO THE SEGMENT HERE   Vocalist Tania Grubbs has released her second album, The Sound of Love . When I looked at the song list, I was reassured and impressed upon finding Duke Ellington's Sound of Love . Her take on this song is masterful. During her Musician's Corner interview, she will talk about two songs on the new CD, Tadd Dameron's If You Could See Me Now , and an original composition entitled The Sculptor's Hands .  What I noticed about Mrs Grubbs is that she finds new ways to express standards from the Great American Songbook. So I was watching one of the Rick Beato videos where he talks extensively about Pat Metheny. Well, that got me excited to review our Pat Metheny collection, and when I came upon a couple of really beautiful tunes - perfect for your contemplative morning - I knew I had to use them to open the show. Today's show will open with the complete version of one of those tunes - The Road to You , the title number from Mr. Metheny's 1993 release.
