I got into Jimmy Greene back in 1999 when he released his debut studio album, Brand New World. I played it a ton, both on the air and at home and in the car and, well, you get the picture.

His sound on tenor sax is as straight ahead as it comes. The new CD is titled As We Are Now, and we'll hear a couple of tracks from this CD during the show.

But the thing to know about Mr. Greene is that he has suffered the unimaginable: his daughter Ana's life was taken at Sandy Hook more than twelve years ago. His music since then reflects the many emotions that such a tragedy engenders. 

Joining Mr. Greene in the current project are Aaron Goldberg piano, Mike Moreno guitar, Dezron Douglas bass, and Jonathan Barber drums. 

Song Pairs

Sometimes it is very interesting to put two songs together if they share one or more characteristics, or perhaps to contrast them. In today's show I will do this twice.
 
In the second hour we'll hear two very interesting vocal numbers, from Marina Pacowsi and then Meltem Ege. What the two songs share is a rather unusual or perhaps surprising sound. I was struck when hearing both songs how they do not sound anything like a Great American Songbook standard, yet were very beautiful each in their own way. 
 
The third hour will feature a couple of songs from guitarist Charlie Byrd, and then we hear one of the songs,  Você E Eu (You And I) from Eliane Elias, after hearing it from Mr. Byrd. They almost sound like two different songs!
