The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents

Kandace Springs

Air Date: 5/4/2025 on 90.5 WICN 9am-12pm ET

Every time we get a new album from Kandace Springs, I know it will be a good one. Her latest CD, Lady in Satin, is no exception. It features something new for Ms. Springs - strings!

In 1958 Billie Holiday released what many consider to be her last best recording, the original Lady in Satin. Ms. Holiday's release features Ray Ellis and his Orchestra, and it covers 12 songs from the Great American Songbook.

Now, Kandace Springs has re-created this recording, with the Orquestra Clássica de Espinho conducted by Diogo Costa.

As you will hear on this show, the sound is lush, inviting, delicious. Ms. Springs is known for her thoughtful and gentle way with lyrics and piano, so it is fitting to have her sing and play with orchestral backing.

The show opens with a ballad version of The End of a Love Affair. I have to admit some bias about this tune since my first hearing of it was a version by Wes Montgomery, played uptempo. But here we dig deeply into this song as it was originally intended, a slow ballad, with emotional lyrics. A totally different vibe from what Wes did. But just as good!

Another song that struck me is Glad to Be Unhappy, which you'll hear during hour two. Check out this version, which I will follow up with Eric Dolphy's instrumental cover of this interesting and unusual song, with an unusual message. (Well, maybe not that unusual.) It's great to hear these songs with lyrics to really get to the core of the song. I enjoy both versions immensely, and I'm sure you will also.

Show Openers

A listener has asked about the music bed I use to open the show. It changes every week, but lately I have been using a couple of songs from Pat Metheny:  Road to You and Tell Her You Saw Me.

Thanks for listening to the Sunday Jazz Brunch. And thanks to all who have sent email with your feedback. Keep it coming! I'm at marty@wicn.org.

Best,

Marty
