I recall during a show years ago when a local musician friend of mine (pianist Lou Terriociano for those in the Worcester, MA area) called to ask me to play some vibes music. He was a bit upset that he didn't hear enough of the instrument on the airwaves. It was easy for me to oblige, as there have always been a number of superb jazz vibes players throughout the years. Like Gary Burton, Milt Jackson, Lionel Hampton, Bobby Hutcherson, Joe Locke, and Warren Wolfe, for example.

Add Behn Gillece to that list. Mr. Gillece has just released his seventh album as a leader, Stick Together.  Featured are pianist Art Hirahara, bassist Boris Kozlov and drummer Rudy Royston.

"The album title, Stick Together, embodies a dual meaning," says Mr. Gillece. "While some may perceive it as a reference to the sticks used in playing vibraphone or drums, the essence lies in the unity and cohesion of the band. The trio — comprising Art, Boris and Rudy — originated during a previous release of mine titled Still Doing Our Thing. Over time, our collaboration has fostered a remarkable synergy evident in our collective recordings. There's an  undeniable sense of joy and ease when we create music together."

Nine of the eleven songs on the CD are original works, illustrating Mr. Gillece's facility with the composer's pen as well as the sticks. I've been playing the CD for several weeks now, and in Sunday's show you'll hear songs from the CD in each of the first three hours.

The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Gabriel Espinosa: From Yucatán to Tarrytown Air Date: 7/7/2024 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET I'm impressed with the lineup of artists appearing at Mark Morganelli's Jazz Forum in Tarrytown, New York. Four or five names pop up on Wikipedia, mostly violin players who also happen to occasionally play viola.
