The Danny Green Trio Plus Strings

Whenever I find an album with string arrangements, particularly if it features a piano trio, I get kind of excited. For certain types of sounds, nothing beats strings. It can add so much in a jazz setting, if done right.

Which explains why during the next few shows I am featuring the 2018 release of One Day It Will by the Danny Green Trio Plus Strings.  

Now, unlike Alan Broadbent's work with full string orchestra, this release features a quartet, with  two violinists, a violist, and a cellist, all members of the San Diego Symphony.

Don't miss the opening of the next show. His song October Ballad is haunting and luscious. It almost sounds like a movie soundtrack, maybe a spy mystery or a bittersweet love story. 

Mr. Green and his Trio Plus Strings have been touring around the country, and I am hoping he will read this and bring his music to Boston! If I may borrow a song title from the New York Voices, you have an Open Invitation!

So yes, I got excited about the discovery of Mr. Green's CD, and I just have to play for you the two other CDs on my radar that feature strings: Danilo Perez with Claus Ogerman and Alan Broadbent with the London Metropolitan Orchestra. 

Along with pianists David Hazeltine and Antonio Adolfo, great vocals by Tony Bennett with k.d. lang, and Dianne Reeves, and additional contemplative material, you will have the perfect gentle start to your Sunday morning.

The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Musician's Corner: Aimée Allen and Love's Crescendo Air Date: 5/28/2023 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET LISTEN TO THE SEGMENT HERE One song. Two arrangements.  On the next Musician's Corner you'll hear a beautiful, meditative song called Love's Crescendo , with melody written by Turkish jazz artist Fahir Atakoğlu, and lyrics written and sung by vocalist Aimée Allen. It is a delicious collaboration.   During this segment, Ms. Allen talks about how Mr. Atakoğlu played the song for her on piano while singing wordless melody. Stunned by its beauty, she agreed to write words that express the profound feeling the melody induces. The subject could only be one thing: love.  Her words are not about romantic love specifically - rather, it is universal love that she wishes to convey to us, the listeners.
