Whenever I get a chance I like to play some of my favorite tracks featuring bass. Awhile back I put together one hour of great bass playing. For the next show, I have a set for you of three top-notch bass players who sound great. But the reason they sound great is not only because they are quite talented artists, but also because, well, the sound is great. That is, the recording techniques meet the level of playing. You will not need to turn up the subwoofer to appreciate the hugely fat bottom produced by Buster Williams, David Finck, and Barry Smith. Tune in during the first hour.

Melody Diachun/Sting

Most jazz people I know say they like Sting, and I do as well. Songs like Fragile have been covered by many artists, and it is included on Melody Diachun's new CD Sumner's Tales: The Music of Sting. Now we have a new artist with her own interpretations of his music.
 
Did you know that Sting's given name is Gordon Sumner? I didn't know that until writing this blog! I was wondering what a Sumner is and if it is the same thing as a Summoner, having recalled the title of one of Sting's releases, Ten Summoner's Tales. It was a play on his family name and a Chaucer character. I bet I'm the last person on Earth to find this out.

The singer pronounces her name 'Day-Shun.'

We'll hear a track from the vocalist's release CinemaCity, with beautiful songs taken from Italian cinema. Do you recall the live concert she gave a few months ago in WICN's Studio 50 with her music director/guitarist Paul Ricci? I am hoping that they return for another live performance, sometime after their world tour is complete. The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Musician's Corner: Aimée Allen and Love's Crescendo Air Date: 5/28/2023 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET LISTEN TO THE SEGMENT HERE One song. Two arrangements.  On the next Musician's Corner you'll hear a beautiful, meditative song called Love's Crescendo , with melody written by Turkish jazz artist Fahir Atakoğlu, and lyrics written and sung by vocalist Aimée Allen. It is a delicious collaboration.   During this segment, Ms. Allen talks about how Mr. Atakoğlu played the song for her on piano while singing wordless melody. Stunned by its beauty, she agreed to write words that express the profound feeling the melody induces. The subject could only be one thing: love.  Her words are not about romantic love specifically - rather, it is universal love that she wishes to convey to us, the listeners. I suppose it is obvious, but just to be clear, my list represents the best from this group , and excludes CDs that we didn't receive, of which I am sure there are many.
