Tenor saxophonist Diego Rivera has been busy lately. With two new CDs just released, it seems his music is everywhere. 

His new release Mestizo is his fifth as a leader, and it features a solid trio with Art Hirahara (piano), Boris Kozlov (bass), and Rudy Royston on drums, plus Alex Sipiagin's trumpet as the second horn in this quintet. During the second hour of the show we'll hear Mr. Rivera's emotional original song, The Rose Window, with Mr. Sipiagin on the flugelhorn.

Opening the second hour, we have the other release on which Mr. Rivera appears, called Blue Moods - Myth and Wisdom. This CD is a tribute to the late bassist Charles Mingus. We hear Mr. Mingus' instantly recognizable tune, Peggy's Blue Skylight.

More New Material

Pianist Joe Alterman has a new release, The Upside of Down, and it continues his engaging sound. Also new is a release from trumpeter Joe Magnarelli, which kicks off the show.

I have been enjoying the new release from vocalist Yolanda Flores, as well as Canadian saxophonist Tom Keenlyside.

That's my first reaction upon hearing a good bebop alto saxophonist. Which is getting harder to do these days. One artist who has kept the bebop tradition alive is Rhode Island's own Greg Abate . Closing in on twenty recordings since his first live date in 1991, Mr. Abate is a prolific exponent of the jazz genre. That's also true for Phil Woods, Mr. Abate's friend, band mate, and sometimes mentor. The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Musician's Corner: Aimée Allen and Love's Crescendo Air Date: 5/28/2023 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET LISTEN TO THE SEGMENT HERE One song. Two arrangements.  On the next Musician's Corner you'll hear a beautiful, meditative song called Love's Crescendo , with melody written by Turkish jazz artist Fahir Atakoğlu, and lyrics written and sung by vocalist Aimée Allen. It is a delicious collaboration.   During this segment, Ms. Allen talks about how Mr. Atakoğlu played the song for her on piano while singing wordless melody. Stunned by its beauty, she agreed to write words that express the profound feeling the melody induces. The subject could only be one thing: love.  Her words are not about romantic love specifically - rather, it is universal love that she wishes to convey to us, the listeners. While the original version of the song appeared on Mr. Atakoğlu's 2020 CD For Love , Ms. Allen liked it enough to include a slightly new arrangem
