The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents

Spotlight on: Steve Davis

Air Date: 10/18/2026 on 90.5 WICN 9am-12pm ET

Thankfully, straight-ahead jazz is alive and well, and you'll hear plenty of it during this spotlight show about trombonist Steve Davis.

For listeners in the Worcester MA area, note that Mr. Davis was born right here in Worcester! He moved to Binghamton, NY at an early age, however.

His career took off when mentor Jackie McLean recommended Mr. Davis to Art Blakey, thus joining the Jazz Messengers in 1989.

Although in the 2000s he has had several bands, the one constant has been the band One for All, featuring  Eric Alexander, Jim Rotondi, David Hazeltine, John Webber and Joe Farnsworth. We'll hear this band along with George Coleman for a few tracks, including the first one of the show.

Other Material

We have jazz from Norway in the form of a new release from bassist Terje Gewelt. To me, this CD has a classic Scandinavian jazz sound.

Guitarist Jocelyn Gould has a new CD, and she is just getting better with each new release. Bravo!

Those who have requested more Marcus Goldhaber will be happy to hear another track from his fine new CD.

Diego Figueiredo and Greg Abate round out artists with new material on this show for the first time.

I hope your autumn is going well.

Best,

Marty

Let's Talk: Alan Broadbent Air Date: 8/29/2021  With the release of his latest CD Broadbent Plays Brubeck , pianist, arranger, and composer Alan Broadbent solidifies his place as the foremost creator of orchestral jazz today.    Wow, that is a big statement, but it is true. I am not sure of the label, however. "Orchestral jazz" seems too narrow for Mr. Broadbent's expansive vision that melds string orchestra with piano trio into a jazzy but classical kind of sound. I guess if you like comparisons, you might consider George Gershwin. But his music also calls to mind Charles Ives, maybe Aaron Copeland. Now you can add Dave Brubeck to the list.   The only way to understand my inadequate words is to listen to the music. Join me on 8/29/2021 as Mr. Broadbent takes us on a tour of his new release.   The show kicks off with a gorgeous track from Hélio Alves. Then the orchestral focus begins. It's All About The Strings The next few songs feature string or full orchestra...

The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Musician's Corner: Aimée Allen and Love's Crescendo Air Date: 5/28/2023 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET LISTEN TO THE SEGMENT HERE One song. Two arrangements.  On the next Musician's Corner you'll hear a beautiful, meditative song called Love's Crescendo , with melody written by Turkish jazz artist Fahir AtakoÄŸlu, and lyrics written and sung by vocalist Aimée Allen. It is a delicious collaboration.   During this segment, Ms. Allen talks about how Mr. AtakoÄŸlu played the song for her on piano while singing wordless melody. Stunned by its beauty, she agreed to write words that express the profound feeling the melody induces. The subject could only be one thing: love.  Her words are not about romantic love specifically - rather, it is universal love that she wishes to convey to us, the listeners. While the original version of the song appeared on Mr. AtakoÄŸlu's 2020 CD For Love , Ms. Allen liked it enough to include a slightly new arrangem...
