Spotlight On: Joshua Redman

He graduated Harvard summa cum laude and as a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Then, having been accepted into Yale law school, he decided to take a year off and move in with some buddies in New York City. 
 
Of course, he never went to Yale. Instead, he won the 1991 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition, and signed his first record deal, with Warner Brothers, in 1993. 
 
Can you imagine if instead of having the music of Joshua Redman, we instead had ads on TV for the Joshua Redman Law firm representing you for falls and other bad things that can happen to you? 
 
 I didn't think so.
 
On today's edition of the Sunday Jazz Brunch, we'll take a deep dive into the music of self-taught tenor saxophonist Joshua Redman. We'll hear a track from his Elastic band, as well as his work with Brad Mehldau, and also his work with the group Brooklyn Rider (which features classical-like string arrangements). 
 
Also, we'll hear several tracks across two CDs that feature vocalist Gabrielle Cavassa. She has a wonderful voice.

Let's Talk: Alan Broadbent Air Date: 8/29/2021  With the release of his latest CD Broadbent Plays Brubeck , pianist, arranger, and composer Alan Broadbent solidifies his place as the foremost creator of orchestral jazz today.    Wow, that is a big statement, but it is true. I am not sure of the label, however. "Orchestral jazz" seems too narrow for Mr. Broadbent's expansive vision that melds string orchestra with piano trio into a jazzy but classical kind of sound. I guess if you like comparisons, you might consider George Gershwin. But his music also calls to mind Charles Ives, maybe Aaron Copeland.
