Spotlight On: Stacey Kent

I've been trying to think of vocalists who might compare to Stacey Kent, whose voice might have the same quality as hers, or similar. But I could not. She has a voice that I like to describe as crystalline.
 
I can contrast her voice with others. Say for example, Dianne Reeves, another great jazz singer. Ms. Reeves has clarity, with great power in her voice. With Stacey Kent, there is power, but what stands out most is the sweetness and clarity. I love that you can readily hear and understand the lyrics. It feels like perfection.
 
Okay, maybe I can compare her to Jane Monheit, who has also a great sweetness as well as range. Now I am realizing that this thought experiment is fruitless. Each of the singers mentioned, most especially our spotlight artist Stacey Kent, is sui generis - one of a kind.
 
Her new CD is A Time For Love, released this year, and from which we will hear several tracks. But I have included in the show a nice sampling of her material, going back as far as 2003. That's  23 years of great music! And you won't be able to tell the age of a piece just by listening - her voice and the recordings are remarkably consistent.

Let's Talk: Alan Broadbent Air Date: 8/29/2021  With the release of his latest CD Broadbent Plays Brubeck , pianist, arranger, and composer Alan Broadbent solidifies his place as the foremost creator of orchestral jazz today.    Wow, that is a big statement, but it is true. I am not sure of the label, however. "Orchestral jazz" seems too narrow for Mr. Broadbent's expansive vision that melds string orchestra with piano trio into a jazzy but classical kind of sound. I guess if you like comparisons, you might consider George Gershwin. But his music also calls to mind Charles Ives, maybe Aaron Copeland.
