It's the final show of the year. 

In the weeks ahead, there will be time for reflection and also for putting together the 'best of' show, something I always look forward to. Meanwhile, for Sunday's show, I have  chosen some of the most beautiful music I could find. You'll hear extraordinary jazz with strings during the first hour. Steve Kuhn, one of my favorite pianists of all time, opens the show with a wonderful string orchestra. Then wait until you hear the string arrangement by Alan Broadbent for Georgia Mancio's 2025 release A Story Left Untold, listening to the title track. Then we have the young Montreal guitarist Sam Kirmayer, perhaps my favorite unsung artist. He has a fabulous tone.

Paul McCandless plays oboe and I can't think of any other jazz oboists off the top of my head. His work is always profound.  Bob James has a really sweet track called One Afternoon that has synth-based strings. We get to trumpeter Chris Botti in the final set and then back to strings with pianist Danny Green. 

For the first hour, just lay back and relax. The music will sweep you to a heavenly spot. 

In the second hour we'll have a special New Year's set. All songs will have something to do with the new year.  But don't miss the first set, which has two exceptional vocalists - Stella Cole and Paul Marinaro - both singing from their newly-released CDs.

Are you an eclectic type of person? If so, you'll love the final hour. We'll have a mix of groove, blues, soul, Brazilian, and straight-ahead jazz. This should get your day off to a good start!

Kim Nazarian Three bands: The New York Voices, El Eco, and Gabriel Espinosa's band. What do they have in common? Vocalist Kim Nazarian. The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Musician's Corner: Tania Grubbs Air Date: 12/22/2024 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET LISTEN TO THE SEGMENT HERE   Vocalist Tania Grubbs has released her second album, The Sound of Love . When I looked at the song list, I was reassured and impressed upon finding Duke Ellington's Sound of Love . Her take on this song is masterful. During her Musician's Corner interview, she will talk about two songs on the new CD, Tadd Dameron's If You Could See Me Now , and an original composition entitled The Sculptor's Hands .  What I noticed about Mrs Grubbs is that she finds new ways to express standards from the Great American Songbook. Let's Talk: Alan Broadbent Air Date: 8/29/2021  With the release of his latest CD Broadbent Plays Brubeck , pianist, arranger, and composer Alan Broadbent solidifies his place as the foremost creator of orchestral jazz today.    Wow, that is a big statement, but it is true. I am not sure of the label, however. "Orchestral jazz" seems too narrow for Mr. Broadbent's expansive vision that melds string orchestra with piano trio into a jazzy but classical kind of sound. I guess if you like comparisons, you might consider George Gershwin. But his music also calls to mind Charles Ives, maybe Aaron Copeland. Now you can add Dave Brubeck to the list.   The only way to understand my inadequate words is to listen to the music.
