Like many jazz artists from Brasil, vocalist and educator Jamile has made New York City her home. Because, "if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere!" And she is well on her way, if not already having made it there.

For example, in 2023 she opened for Rosa Passos, Ron Carter, and Kenny Barron in a concert at Jazz at Lincoln Center. And, when in New York, you might catch her at one of the popular jazz clubs such as  Birdland, Mezzrow, Smalls Jazz Club, or Dizzy’s.

I've been playing her new CD Pursuit of a Pulse, for a few weeks now, and it is truly original.

The CD features the very talented Miki Yamanaka on piano, with her trio, plus saxophonist Steve Wilson.

On today's show you'll hear two tracks from the new recording, one to open the second hour and one to open the third hour.

The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Musician's Corner: Tania Grubbs Air Date: 12/22/2024 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET LISTEN TO THE SEGMENT HERE   Vocalist Tania Grubbs has released her second album, The Sound of Love . When I looked at the song list, I was reassured and impressed upon finding Duke Ellington's Sound of Love . Her take on this song is masterful. During her Musician's Corner interview, she will talk about two songs on the new CD, Tadd Dameron's If You Could See Me Now , and an original composition entitled The Sculptor's Hands .  What I noticed about Mrs Grubbs is that she finds new ways to express standards from the Great American Songbook. So I was watching one of the Rick Beato videos where he talks extensively about Pat Metheny. Well, that got me excited to review our Pat Metheny collection, and when I came upon a couple of really beautiful tunes - perfect for your contemplative morning - I knew I had to use them to open the show. Today's show will open with the complete version of one of those tunes - The Road to You , the title number from Mr. Metheny's 1993 release. After receiving an email asking about this and some other tunes that I use as openers, I decided. Why not do an hour of just openers?
