I know that many listeners of the Sunday Jazz Brunch really like piano trios, just like I do! Well, you're going to enjoy the second set during your Contemplative Hour, as I have put a few of my favorites together for you. Opening the set is the superb Ellis Marsalis, patriarch of the famed Marsalis family. Mr. Marsalis passed away in 2020 during the pandemic, at age 85.

We'll also hear from the great Eugene Maslov, originally from St. Petersburg, Russia. His full name is Yevgeny Valentinovich Maslov, and in Russian it looks like this: Евгений Валентинович Маслов. He passed away in 2011 at age 66. 

Finally, we have a representative from Sweden - Esbjörn Svensson. He formed the trio E.S.T. and produced a number of successful and rather eclectic releases. Just look at the CD and song titles to get the idea that he had a unique perspective. He passed away in 2008 due to a scuba diving accident.

Also in the mix is vocalist Tania Grubbs, whose latest release The Sound of Love is truly superb. Check out her interview on the Sunday Jazz Brunch.

Wes

Steve Alle and his big band have come out with a tribute to jazz artists from Indianapolis, titled Naptown Sound. You'll hear Full House, with Dave Stryker paying homage to the great Wes Montgomery. Also we have Chicago's Tim Fitzgerald with his own tribute CD called Full House, playing a fabulous arrangement of Far Wes. Finally, we will hear the man himself, playing Here's That Rainy Day. Brecker and Morgan 

No, that isn't a law firm. I'm putting Randy Brecker and Lee Morgan together, because Mr. Brecker sounds so much like Lee Morgan on the new CD from Charles Chen called Building Characters. Check it out during the final set of hour 2. Let me know if you agree!

The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Gabriel Espinosa: From Yucatán to Tarrytown Air Date: 7/7/2024 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET I'm impressed with the lineup of artists appearing at Mark Morganelli's Jazz Forum in Tarrytown, New York. The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Musician's Corner: Tania Grubbs Air Date: 12/22/2024 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET LISTEN TO THE SEGMENT HERE   Vocalist Tania Grubbs has released her second album, The Sound of Love . When I looked at the song list, I was reassured and impressed upon finding Duke Ellington's Sound of Love . Her take on this song is masterful. During her Musician's Corner interview, she will talk about two songs on the new CD, Tadd Dameron's If You Could See Me Now , and an original composition entitled The Sculptor's Hands .  What I noticed about Mrs Grubbs is that she finds new ways to express standards from the Great American Songbook.
