Here are your very brief summaries of a selection of new material that has arrived at WICN. 

Affinity Trio

Eric Jacobson leads a trumpet-based trio with piano and bass. The thing you'll notice right away about Mr. Jacobson is his tone. It is extremely clean and precise. With excellent accompaniment, he is a pleasure to listen to. 

Donna Singer/Ranses Colon

I love the double bass. Here we have basically a duet with vocalist. The sound is exciting as the bass essentially plays rhythm and harmony, as only a bass can do. Don't Hurry Love is a tune you don't want to miss in the second hour of the show.

Michael Morreale

If you listened to the Musican's Corner a few weeks back with Mr. Morreale, you'll know what a good pianist he is, although he bills himself as primarily a trumpeter. I had asked him if he would consider doing an all-piano album, and his answer was perfect: he sent us this new CD! It is very good. I hope you can get up early enough to hear Lucky To Be Me to open up the show. If not, be sure to tune in at the start of the second hour.

John LaBarbera Big Band

The top-flight talent in this big band includes Steve Wilson, Renee Rosnes, Clay Jenkins, and bassist Rufus Reid. They are really tight - the first thing I'll notice about any large ensemble. The CD has songs written by Brubeck, Curtis Fuller, and Elvin Jones, and it includes several originals as well. This a smokin' big band!

Brian Simpson

Janet Evra

St. Louis-based and English-born vocalist and bass player Janet Evra brings us a selection of tunes from the French canon, with a couple of original numbers thrown in as well. She has been compared to Stacey Kent, Melody Gardot, Emilie-Claire Barlow, and Madeleine Peyroux, insofar as she has a superb voice and also as someone who interprets French jazz. I'm glad to add her to that list!

I suppose it is obvious, but just to be clear, my list represents the best from this group , and excludes CDs that we didn't receive, of which I am sure there are many. Four or five names pop up on Wikipedia, mostly violin players who also happen to occasionally play viola. Add to this, over the many thousands of CDs I have listened to during my tenure at WICN, I do not recall ever coming across a jazz viola player.  Until now. Miami's Debbie Spring joins me on this edition of the Sunday Jazz Brunch to talk about the viola in jazz as well as her new CD, Tocamos . You'll hear all about her instrument.
