The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents

The Best New Jazz

Air Date: 10/16/2022

Let's run down a few of the tasty treats that await you on the next edition of the Sunday Jazz Brunch. Warning: You may not recognize some of the names!

Roberta Donnay

Is it obvious from the title of her new CD, BLOSSOM-ing, that Ms. Donnay pays tribute to Blossom Dearie? She chose 16 songs associated with Dearie for the album, written by various composers and lyricists: Peel Me A Grape, Spring In Manhattan, The Party’s Over, Moonlight Savings Time, Just One Of Those Things, Someone To Watch Over Me. And there's at least one more - Inside a Silent Tear - my favorite of the bunch. It kicks off the New for You hour at 9am ET. I noticed this song is getting covered a lot lately, as it should. Add this version to the list of well-done covers.

Tom Harrell

Mr. Harrell has been playing straight-ahead jazz on trumpet and flugelhorn for five decades. On his new release Oak Tree he is joined by several artists who themselves are pretty well seasoned: pianist/keyboardist Luis Perdomo, bassist Ugonna Okegwo, and drummer Adam Cruz. The track we'll hear toward the end of the 9am hour is called Evoorg. Yup, it's backwards!

David Blake

Vancouver guitarist David Blake has released only his second album, Fun House. I have to admit I think something is going on up in Canada, as our northern neighbor is producing some fine artists, especially guitarists. (I'm thinking of Sam Kirmayer.)  He has a fine quintet working on eight original tunes. We'll hear Play Dead, a somewhat mysterious melody that takes us on a journey, and showcases the nice tone that Mr. Blake achieves on his instrument.

Al Foster

Drummer Al Foster has pretty much done it all. A key member of the Miles Davis band for thirteen years, he is one of the most well-respected drummers around. And on his new CD Reflections he surrounds himself with some artists who have garnered their share of success as well: Nicholas Payton, Chris Potter, Kevin Hays, and Vicente Archer.

Alex Tremblay

With eight original compositions in his debut release Thoughts and Images, bassist/composer Alex Tremblay records with some of New York's top up and coming jazz artists. The track we'll hear features vocalist Vanisha Gould. About the compositions, he says "A lot of the music that I wrote for this record stems from either thoughts or images that I’ve experienced that bring me back to a place of reflection or memory of a personal experience."

Gregory Tardy

On this collection of new and original compositions, saxophonist Gregory Tardy brings some big names to the studio: Marcus Printup (trumpet), Keith Brown (piano); Sean Conly (bass), and Willie Jones III
(drums and producer). His first album was released in 1992, the very same year that he joined the Elvin Jones Jazz Machine. One project that featured his fine saxophone playing was a Grammy winner in 2006, along with trumpeter Brian Lynch. We'll hear the title track from the new CD, Sufficient Grace.

I really hope you like this collection of great new jazz. Let me know what you think - I'm at marty@wicn.org.

Best,

Marty
