I first became aware of the music of Tadd Dameron when a friend lent me his vinyl disc Mating Call, recorded in 1956. At that point I was a confirmed Coltrane nut, like most jazz fans eventually become. But I had never heard him play such interesting melodies as when I heard the two artists on this release, with Mr. Dameron on piano. 

Later, Mr. Coltrane would further his exploration of the tenor saxophone in duet with song crafters like Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk. 

On this week's edition of the Sunday Jazz Brunch you'll hear one of Tadd Dameron's most well-known tunes as played by flugelhornist (love that word!) Dmitry Matheny, from his new album Cascadia. The song, On a Misty Night, did appear on that Coltrane/Dameron release as well.

Speaking of Coltrane, the show opens with Mr. Matheny performing the saxophonist's pensive After the Rain, first recorded in 1963. It is a beautiful song.

Book by Paul Combs
The first taste of Tadd Dameron comes during hour one. Near the end of the hour you'll hear a track from the superb Paul Combs' release Unknown Dameron, which presents songs written by the influential composer/arranger but never recorded or recorded only rarely. 

It is said that while he was relatively unknown himself, Tadd Dameron's influence was great on many well-known composer/arrangers, such as Horace Silver, Benny Golson, and Quincy Jones.

The Rest of the Story

You are going to really enjoy the first hour of the show. These tracks are just downright delicious. You'll hear a gorgeous string arrangement from Kevin Kaska. John Harrison is one of my favorite pianists, and I am still trying to find out where he plays in the New England area. We have emotional vocal numbers from Melody Gardot, Jo Harrop, Rebecca Kilgore, and Tierney Sutton. 

The second hour has some great new material, and the tempo will increase as we move through the hour. The end of the hour has a lot of energy, featuring the complex Mingus tune Peggy's Blue Skylight as well as an original from the Ben Markley Big Band.

During Brazil and World Hour, you'll hear my favorite version of Luz. Also you'll hear a sweet song by Luiz Bonfa, who I think of as "one of the original Bossa Nova guys." All good material for your Sunday morning.

All I can say about groove hour is: it grooves. I think that word includes whatever other positive adjectives I might use to describe the hour.

The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Musician's Corner: Aimée Allen and Love's Crescendo Air Date: 5/28/2023 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET LISTEN TO THE SEGMENT HERE One song. Two arrangements.  On the next Musician's Corner you'll hear a beautiful, meditative song called Love's Crescendo , with melody written by Turkish jazz artist Fahir Atakoğlu, and lyrics written and sung by vocalist Aimée Allen. It is a delicious collaboration.   During this segment, Ms. Allen talks about how Mr. Atakoğlu played the song for her on piano while singing wordless melody. Stunned by its beauty, she agreed to write words that express the profound feeling the melody induces. The subject could only be one thing: love.  Her words are not about romantic love specifically - rather, it is universal love that she wishes to convey to us, the listeners.
