The Best In Jazz, New and Really New

For those of you jazzers that like to hear new material, welcome to the club. In the image above we have six CDs that you'll hear on this show, and all but one have been released in 2022. The only one that was not is the Randy Napoleon, from 2019. 

I recognize that for the general jazz listener, 2019 could easily be counted as a new release, as it seems to me that in general, jazz people often gravitate to the old masters from decades ago. So that's what is behind the statement "new and really new."

Speaking of Randy Napoleon, he actually does have a brand new CD, Puppets. Because I think Mr. Napoleon is a great young talent, I present material from three of his CDs. We also have Rust Belt Roots from last year, as well as the pictured CD Common Tones. 

The first song we hear from Puppets features vocalist Aubrey Johnson. I'm not sure but I think this might be the first time Mr. Napoleon has recorded with a vocalist. I could not find any vocal tracks on the other two CDs. Ms. Johnson is excellent.

The Other CDs

I've been expecting something from Najee for some time. I'm guessing that the pandemic has something to do with this hiatus.

Vocalist Sally Terrell is new to the Sunday Jazz Brunch, as is Immanuel Wilkins (pictured in the lower right). Ms. Terrell sings pianist Denny Zeitlin's Quiet Now, a ballad made popular by Bill Evans, who included it in his standard repertoire.

Guitarist Phill Fest's new CD Seresta will delight you if you enjoy Brazil and World Jazz Hour. And vocalist Sinne Eeg burnishes her credentials as a big band headliner with her new release. I do realize that the San Gabriel 7 is not quite a big band, but they sound like one!

Lynne Arriale, Upcoming Interview

In an upcoming show, pianist Lynne Arriale will be joining us for a deep dive into her music. We'll be listening to a few songs from her new CD, The Lights Are Always On.

The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Musician's Corner:  Greg Abate Remembers Phil Woods Air Date: 4/30/2023 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET LISTEN TO THE SEGMENT HERE Bird Lives! That's my first reaction upon hearing a good bebop alto saxophonist. Which is getting harder to do these days. One artist who has kept the bebop tradition alive is Rhode Island's own Greg Abate . Closing in on twenty recordings since his first live date in 1991, Mr. Abate is a prolific exponent of the jazz genre. The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Musician's Corner: Aimée Allen and Love's Crescendo Air Date: 5/28/2023 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET LISTEN TO THE SEGMENT HERE One song. Two arrangements.  On the next Musician's Corner you'll hear a beautiful, meditative song called Love's Crescendo , with melody written by Turkish jazz artist Fahir Atakoğlu, and lyrics written and sung by vocalist Aimée Allen. It is a delicious collaboration.   During this segment, Ms. Allen talks about how Mr. Atakoğlu played the song for her on piano while singing wordless melody. Stunned by its beauty, she agreed to write words that express the profound feeling the melody induces. The subject could only be one thing: love.  Her words are not about romantic love specifically - rather, it is universal love that she wishes to convey to us, the listeners. While the original version of the song appeared on Mr. Atakoğlu's 2020 CD For Love , Ms. Allen liked it enough to include a slightly new arrangem

The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Best of 2023 Air Date: 1/14/2024 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET It's time to look back at the best jazz releases of 2023. In that year I played approximately 200 new CDs. I suppose it is obvious, but just to be clear, my list represents the best from this group , and excludes CDs that we didn't receive, of which I am sure there are many.
