Jack Brandfield

Twenty-three year old Jack Brandfield credits guitarist Randy Napoleon and bassist Rodney Whitaker with teaching him "what it means to swing, how to present a melody, and the importance of carrying the torch for this great American art form." 
 
You can decide how well they did for yourself by listening to their new CD I'll Never Be the Same. I think they did a pretty good job.
 
The CD represents Mr. Brandfield's debut. His tenor sound is big and fat, like that of his heroes, Ben Webster and Johnny Griffin. The engineering on the CD accentuates the sound. As Mr. Brandfield says:
 
"I have always tried to emulate their ability to sing through the horn with confidence and a sense of subtlety and beauty. On the record, I pay tribute to these inspirations by attempting to do what they did best, presenting my favorite melodies with my own voice."
 
This is a drumless trio - much like the 1970s Oscar Peterson trio with guitarist Joe Pass and bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen. You'll hear the track Vignette from the CD during the early part of hour two. We'll explore this CD further over the next few weeks.

The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Gabriel Espinosa: From Yucatán to Tarrytown Air Date: 7/7/2024 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET I'm impressed with the lineup of artists appearing at Mark Morganelli's Jazz Forum in Tarrytown, New York. Four or five names pop up on Wikipedia, mostly violin players who also happen to occasionally play viola.
