Female Vocalists

I've been waiting for the next batch of excellent female vocalists, and it has arrived. It's funny how that works - certain categories seemingly coming in batches. 

Veronica Swift's new CD This Bitter Earth is one of those CDs. Ms. Swift garnered two JazzTimes 2019 awards: 2019 Best New Artist and Best Vocal Release poll. Hear her sing a gentle number during the second half of your Contemplative Hour.

Also in the category is Lauren White's new CD, Ever Since the World Ended.  During the first hour, you'll hear her version of Karrin Allyson's Some of That Sunshine. Then during hour two, get ready for a unique, jazzy version of Bill Withers' Just The Two of Us.

I'm sure I have written about this before, but Georgia Mancio's new CD with Alan Broadbent is superb. The tracks on Quiet is the Star get better with each listening. Opening up hour two, listen to the dark song Night After Night.

New artists for the SJB include Isaiah J.Thompson, a young new pianist. Also we have the Ian Charlton Big Band and the young tenor saxophonist Jack Brandfield.

Getting back to hour one for a moment, check out the little James Taylor tribute with Lori Bell and Ron Satterfield, and then the George Kahn Quartet. I've heard it said that Ron Satterfield sings more like James Taylor than James Taylor himself!

That's my first reaction upon hearing a good bebop alto saxophonist. Which is getting harder to do these days. One artist who has kept the bebop tradition alive is Rhode Island's own Greg Abate . Closing in on twenty recordings since his first live date in 1991, Mr. Abate is a prolific exponent of the jazz genre. That's also true for Phil Woods, Mr. Abate's friend, band mate, and sometimes mentor. The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Musician's Corner: Aimée Allen and Love's Crescendo Air Date: 5/28/2023 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET LISTEN TO THE SEGMENT HERE One song. Two arrangements.  On the next Musician's Corner you'll hear a beautiful, meditative song called Love's Crescendo , with melody written by Turkish jazz artist Fahir Atakoğlu, and lyrics written and sung by vocalist Aimée Allen. It is a delicious collaboration.   During this segment, Ms. Allen talks about how Mr. Atakoğlu played the song for her on piano while singing wordless melody. Stunned by its beauty, she agreed to write words that express the profound feeling the melody induces. The subject could only be one thing: love.  Her words are not about romantic love specifically - rather, it is universal love that she wishes to convey to us, the listeners. I suppose it is obvious, but just to be clear, my list represents the best from this group , and excludes CDs that we didn't receive, of which I am sure there are many.
