When I want to hear some good flute playing, I'll often turn to folks like Lori Bell or Andrea Brachfeld. Now we can add Yulia Musayelyan to that list!

Her new CD Oblivion is that good.  Sunday's edition of the SJB opens with the title track, a piece written by Astor Piazzolla in 1982. “Its understated yet dark and powerful melody captivated me from the first time I heard it as a teenager on an orchestra tour in Havana, Cuba,” says Ms. Musayelyan. 

If you are familiar with the tango, then you'll instantly recognize the songs on the new CD.  One old favorite, Flor De Lino, appears in Brazil/World hour. This song is considered to be written in a style called tango vals, which generally means that it is a tango with a waltz (3/4) time signature.

We'll be hearing more from Yulia Musayelyan in the coming weeks.

Some other items of note:

  • You'll hear another couple of tracks from the delightful Death Of Expertise, Bruce Brown's new CD. I am looking forward to exploring this CD further.
  • Listen to the guitar playing on the George Kahn number during hour one. It's very sweet.
  • We have a couple in a row from piano master Alan Pasqua during hour one.
  • Zoe Scott's version of the Beatles' Baby It's You had me doing a search and then listening to the original, which I barely remembered from 1963. And it sounds so different. A great song.
  • Hour two opens with the Steve Gadd Band's Doesn't She Know By Now from their latest release Blue Note Live Tokyo. This track, with its Steely-Dan-esque sound, is hard to get out of your head, and it is one of three originals never before recorded by the band. It sounds like it was a hit number at some point earlier in time.
  • Brazil/World hour opens with a song written by Toninho Horta and played by Kenny Polson from his new CD. After that I have Toninho Horta himself playing one of his own songs.
  • During groove hour I decided to take a bit of a detour to the past, with older songs from Spyro Gyra and Earl Klugh. Also I've got something from Mike Ricchiuti - Chuck Loeb's former keyboard player.
