Alan Broadbent

Air Date:  11/1/2020

Combine a range of influences from Bud Powell to Gustav Mahler, add a heaping quantity of technical virtuosity on the keyboard, and don't forget plenty of talent for composing and arranging for orchestra, and you might come up with someone like Alan Broadbent. Featured in the next edition of the Sunday Jazz Brunch, Mr. Broadbent shows that artistic truth can be reached in the intimate confines of a jazz trio, in the expansive emotional potential of a full orchestra, or somewhere in between.

Opening the show is a beautiful work from his 2017 release Developing Story. Entitled Children of Lima, it will wrap you in a silken blanket of warmth. It will turn whatever is rough and make it smooth. Listen to it to refresh your soul, to lift your heart.

After transitioning to Tom Ranier's excellent new album This Way, and a terrific track from Gregory Porter's Liquid Spirit, we return to Mr. Broadbent.

His 2006 work Every Time I Think of You has two tasty treats: Brian Bromberg on bass, and the Tokyo Strings performing the orchestral parts. We hear Nirvana Blues, with strings insinuating an intriguing  sound. You know it is blues, but something else is going on.

The piano trio and string orchestra blend perfectly on this album. The orchestra is not present for accompaniment; rather, they are an equal member. There is an interplay between the piano and strings, a joy to hear.

Further highlights from Mr. Broadbent's career appear throughout the show. Later in Hour One we hear his version of Ceora, again with the services of Brian Bromberg. We hear a couple of tracks from his new trio CD with Harvie S. and Billy Mintz, Trio in Motion. Later, in Hour Two, I've got Mr. Broadbent's 1992 release with his long-time bass player, Putter Smith, and drummer Frank Gibson, Jr. That's the CD that introduced me to Mr. Broadbent and his amazing technique.

Some of the other tasty treats for you in your Contemplative Hour: a track by the New York Voices by request of someone who commented on my last blog (thank you!),  a track featuring Mike Metheny on EVI (see my previous blog), and something I haven't played yet from Mon David and Josh Nelson's new release, D+N+A.

For new hour, I have all the usual suspects, plenty of Gregory Porter, some fine David Finck that you've got to hear, more from Paulette McWilliams and her new release A Woman's Story, which just keeps getting better, and my all-time favorite song from Eric Alexander called I Found You - followed by Tony Bennett together with Bill Charlap!

Brazil/World this week is especially good. Take my word for it. I mixed it up a bit, and I think that makes it more interesting. There's material in there that I have never played before, even older stuff.

Groove hour opens with vintage Grover Washington, Jr. I have heard him called 'The Father of Smooth Jazz.'  I play a few tracks from a group called Jazz Funk Soul, but I also have some older material from  Pat Metheny,  Bobby Caldwell, and Natalie Cole. The aforementioned are scattered throughout the hour, breaking up a mixture of groove tracks from Al Jarreau, Euge Groove, and The Jeff Lorber Fusion.

Well, I hope you like all of this. I wish you good health!

Best,

Marty
