Let's hold on to that delicious summer feeling, even though, for some of us, the air lately has a distinct chill to it. To help you along with this effort, I have programmed a set during hour two, containing several songs that represent different aspects of  (almost) everybody's favorite season. Firstly, we have Michael Franks. If you are familiar with his work, you'll know that summer is a frequent topic of his songs. Connecticut native, vocalist, pianist, and composer Nicole Zuraitis won a Grammy in 2024 for Best Jazz Vocal Album, for her CD How Love Begins.  I have to admit I didn't know about this until recently, when I discovered that Samara Joy didn't win three in a row!  Let's have a listen to a song from that Grammy-winning CD:   The word is that she is quite an entertainer when performing live. Fittingly, her new CD is Live at Vic's . Near the end of the second hour you'll hear Jimmy Webb's famous tune from the CD, the song that Bob Dylan called 'the greatest song ever written,' the song that musicians love for its unusual, complicated harmony: Witchita Lineman . The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Let's Be Careful Out There Air Date: 8/3/2025 on 90.5 WICN 9am-12pm ET If you miss the air date: click here for the archi ves for up to two weeks . When I am doing the Sunday Jazz Brunch, I feel like I'm in another world, one where the most important thing is finding and listening to great jazz. It's a zone, and I very much enjoy being in that zone. When you listen to the show, I am hoping that you feel the same way. The music should transport you. If it's groove, you should feel the groove. If it is contemplative, you should feel thoughtful and mellow. And so on. I hope The Sunday Jazz Brunch achieves this to some extent.   When I say 'Let's Be Careful Out There' at the end of the show, I am thinking about the zone I'm in and how it is ending - therefore I am leaving that zone, together with you. I got into Jimmy Greene back in 1999 when he released his debut studio album, Brand New World. I played it a ton, both on the air and at home and in the car and, well, you get the picture. His sound on tenor sax is as straight ahead as it comes. The new CD is titled As We Are Now , and we'll hear a couple of tracks from this CD during the show. But the thing to know about Mr. Greene is that he has suffered the unimaginable: his daughter Ana's life was taken at Sandy Hook more than twelve years ago. The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Tessa Souter Air Date: 6/29/2025 on 90.5 WICN 9am-12pm ET If you miss the air date: click here for the archi ves for up to two weeks . Back in 2012, vocalist Tessa Souter released Beyond the Blue, a CD that celebrated great classical melodies by turning them into jazz standards, if they had not already been. So for example, we hear The Lamp is Low, which is based on a work by Ravel.  Now Ms. Souter releases her sixth CD, Shadows and Silence, the Erik Satie Project . This project features pianist Luis Perdomo, bassist Yasushi Nakamura, drummer Billy Drummond, trumpeter Nadje Nordhuis and saxophonist Steve Wilson. In the new release, we hear Ms. Souter's lyrics integrated into the music of Erik Satie. Many listeners will know the Trois Gymnopédies  from an old Blood, Sweat, and Tears album. Photo by Tatiana Gorilovsky If you are a longtime listener of the Sunday Jazz Brunch, you know how much I like Alan Broadbent - his piano playing, his composing, and his arranging. A few years back he began releasing a series of CDs with vocalist Georgia Mancio. They seem to have a real connection in terms of their music. You can hear it. I recall reading somewhere that Mr. Broadbent was surprised and quite pleased that he found someone to put perfect lyrics to his melodies. I have two prior releases from this duo and this one looks to be the third. They are all keepers.  We open the show with a stunning orchestral arrangement to accompany Ms. Mancio's delicate voice.
