Like many jazz artists from Brasil, vocalist and educator Jamile has made New York City her home. Because, "if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere!" And she is well on her way, if not already having made it there. The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Last Night When We Were Young Air Date: 9/28/2025 on 90.5 WICN 9am-12pm ET If you miss the air date: click here for the archi ves for up to two weeks .   This is a song written in 1935 with music  by Harold Arlen and lyrics by Yip Harburg.  It was intended for the 1935 movie Metropolitan but  never used, although an instrumental version is played during the end credits.   Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it, I cannot get the melody of this song out of my head! I was looking through a jazz fake book (a book of songs with the melody and harmony written out) and I happened upon this song. Playing the melody on guitar, I recognized it but couldn't remember where I had heard it.  Then it came to me: It is on one of my favorite jazz albums with strings, Alan Broadbent's Every Time I Think of You from 2006. Kim Nazarian Three bands: The New York Voices, El Eco, and Gabriel Espinosa's band. What do they have in common? Vocalist Kim Nazarian. Members of all three bands appeared together recently at the Jazz Forum in Tarrytown New York. Featured on the date, besides Ms. Nazarian, were Darmon Meader voice, tenor sax (NY Voices); Guillermo Nojechowicz drums (El Eco); Gabriel Espinosa bass, composer, and Misha Tsiganov piano (Gabriel Espinosa's band).  New York Voices  Let's start with the New York Voices. This is probably Ms. Nazarian's most visible and well-known project. She is a founding member of the group, which formed in 1987. My first experience of tenor saxophonist George Coleman was with the Miles Davis Quintet. I was listening to their release  Seven Step s to Heaven and wondering who the great sax player was, noting that it was not the fellow that I was used to hearing, John Coltrane. Mr. Coleman had joined the quintet after Mr. Coltrane and then Hank Mobley, but just before Wayne Shorter.    Looking back on the period I just covered, 1955-1968, you have to admit this was a peak period for jazz. It's my favorite era for Miles and the various incarnations of his quintet.   The new recording, George Coleman with Strings , is Mr. Coleman's first with the backing of a string orchestra. Blue Born in the Bronx, growing up on Long Island, T.K. Blue is a New Yorker through and through. He's traveled the world, though, even living in Paris for nearly a decade during the eighties. Mr. Blue has toured Africa, once with  Abdullah Ibrahim (also known as Dollar Brand), and a second time with his mentor, Randy Weston. He became Mr. Weston's musical director, which lasted for almost three decades.   One could think of the itinerant Mr. Blue as an international ambassador for New York City. Home since the 1990's, he has become embedded in the jazz scene not only by performing, but also through his work as an educator at several area colleges.   However, it is as a fixture in the free Jazzmobile and NYC Parks summer concerts where so many have been able to hear this accomplished artist. Connecticut native, vocalist, pianist, and composer Nicole Zuraitis won a Grammy in 2024 for Best Jazz Vocal Album, for her CD How Love Begins.  I have to admit I didn't know about this until recently, when I discovered that Samara Joy didn't win three in a row!  Let's have a listen to a song from that Grammy-winning CD:   The word is that she is quite an entertainer when performing live. Fittingly, her new CD is Live at Vic's . When I am doing the Sunday Jazz Brunch, I feel like I'm in another world, one where the most important thing is finding and listening to great jazz. It's a zone, and I very much enjoy being in that zone. When you listen to the show, I am hoping that you feel the same way. The music should transport you. If it's groove, you should feel the groove. If it is contemplative, you should feel thoughtful and mellow. And so on. I hope The Sunday Jazz Brunch achieves this to some extent.   When I say 'Let's Be Careful Out There' at the end of the show, I am thinking about the zone I'm in and how it is ending - therefore I am leaving that zone, together with you.
