This is a quote from the recent book from Bloom's School of Music founder David Bloom. The book, entitled What is Soul?, might at first glance seem to be about soul music, or maybe soul in music, and it is, but it is more than that, as evidenced by the above quote. 

Mr. Bloom, native of Chicago, has released a new album entitled Shadow of a Soul, tracks from which you will enjoy on this edition of the Sunday Jazz Brunch. 

I am not surprised to learn that Mr. Bloom has wide ranging interests, has published books including a number of music instruction guides, has founded a music school, and plays guitar and flute at the professional level. His music is very original and in my view reflects the eclectic nature of his accomplishments.

 

 

The show opens with the title track from the new release. It is mysterious and beguiling. I can say the same about another track that opens the second hour, called Fatal Honey.

I have asked some of my Chicago jazz friends about David and they gush about him- a fine artist and a good man. I'm thrilled to premiere his new music on SJB.

Emotional

I like to think that all my sets are dripping with emotion, but sometimes a set will come together and the emotion will ooze out all over the place. That's what you'll hear at the end of the first hour, and I just had to call it out to you. The first two tracks sort of have children at play as a theme or sub theme, although the Karrin Allyson track Live for Life is really just using the sound of children playing to add an exclamation point to its message. Kristin Callahan's Lost in a Dream is an unrequited love song, and we know how strong those emotions can be. Luiz Bonfa puts a bow tie on the set with his delicate magic.

Clara Moreno

Every now and then I like to pull out the one CD we have from this fine Brazilian singer. You'll hear two tracks from the CD during Brazil/World hour. I'm sure you'll agree she is a top-flight artist.

The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Musician's Corner: Aimée Allen and Love's Crescendo Air Date: 5/28/2023 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET LISTEN TO THE SEGMENT HERE One song. Two arrangements.  On the next Musician's Corner you'll hear a beautiful, meditative song called Love's Crescendo , with melody written by Turkish jazz artist Fahir Atakoğlu, and lyrics written and sung by vocalist Aimée Allen. It is a delicious collaboration.   During this segment, Ms. Allen talks about how Mr. Atakoğlu played the song for her on piano while singing wordless melody. Stunned by its beauty, she agreed to write words that express the profound feeling the melody induces. The subject could only be one thing: love.  Her words are not about romantic love specifically - rather, it is universal love that she wishes to convey to us, the listeners.
