The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents

During the past several months I have been exploring the music of this popular Brazilian singer during Brazil/World hour. This week we will hear a very catchy original work from the artist, a song called Infinito Desejo (Infinite Desire).

Ms. Bethânia is one of the top-selling musical artists in Brazil, releasing fifty albums since 1964 and ranked in 2012 as the fifth most popular Brazilian musical artist.

Often when I am listening to Brazilian jazz, I wonder - how does someone come up with songs that have such amazing melody, harmony, and rhythm? I wonder if there is something special in the water down in Brazil (another great song you'll hear toward the end of Brazil/World hour).  When I first heard Infinito Desejo I was delighted by all the interesting turns, the use of repetition, the simple arrangement with guitar trio and voice, everything that makes for such great Brazilian jazz. This is why I devote an hour to it every week.

Other Tasty Treats

A few weeks ago I heard a fine piano trio and inquired as to who was playing. It was Jerry Kalaf's trio, with Mr. Kalaf on drums. His work on vibes with Susan Krebs is familiar to me. Since I didn't know that Mr. Kalaf played drums as well, I was a bit surprised. I contacted him and he sent me one of his trio recordings, Welcome to Earth, featuring pianist Leonard Thompson and bassist Ryan McGillicuddy. We'll hear a couple of tracks from this fine release.

There is a lot of great new jazz, and it is sprinkled throughout the four hours of the Sunday Jazz Brunch. Tune in at 9am ET for the newest of the new, with songs having their premiere on the show.

The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Musician's Corner: Aimée Allen and Love's Crescendo Air Date: 5/28/2023 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET LISTEN TO THE SEGMENT HERE One song. Two arrangements.  On the next Musician's Corner you'll hear a beautiful, meditative song called Love's Crescendo , with melody written by Turkish jazz artist Fahir Atakoğlu, and lyrics written and sung by vocalist Aimée Allen. It is a delicious collaboration.   During this segment, Ms. Allen talks about how Mr. Atakoğlu played the song for her on piano while singing wordless melody. Stunned by its beauty, she agreed to write words that express the profound feeling the melody induces. The subject could only be one thing: love.  Her words are not about romantic love specifically - rather, it is universal love that she wishes to convey to us, the listeners.
