For years now I have been listening to Nate Najar keep the spirit of Charlie Byrd alive. You may recall that it was Mr. Byrd along with a fellow named Stan Getz who brought bossa nova to the USA by releasing the seminal recording Jazz Samba in 1962.

To celebrate this 60th anniversary, Mr. Najar has released Jazz Samba Pra Sempre (Jazz Samba Forever), a "re-imagining" of the original release.

The artists on this release have done their best to physically call on the spirits of the original artists. Mr. Najar plays Charlie Byrd's actual guitar, and Herman Burney plays Keter Betts' original bass, used on the 1962 release. Chuck Redd on drums comes from the original Charlie Byrd Trio!

The song E Luxo So written by Ary Barroso features vocalist Daniela Soledade and will air during Brazil/World hour. It completes a triplet starting off with Ms. Soledade from her own new release, Pretty World. In between the two tracks you'll hear from Charlie Byrd himself.

During the first hour we have a tribute to the man who wrote most of the music for the early James Bond movies, John Barry. First up is the new memorial CD from pianist Frank Kimbrough, with an instrumental version of Barry's You Only Live Twice. We hear the song again at the end of the triplet, this time with the lyrics of Leslie Bricusse, as sung by Sarah McKenzie. In between we have an actual tribute song written by Kevin Kaska and performed by his Jazz Orchestra. It has a very convincing "Bond" sound.

I'd love to talk about all the other great songs you'll hear, but space does not permit. The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Musician's Corner: Aimée Allen and Love's Crescendo Air Date: 5/28/2023 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET LISTEN TO THE SEGMENT HERE One song. Two arrangements.  On the next Musician's Corner you'll hear a beautiful, meditative song called Love's Crescendo , with melody written by Turkish jazz artist Fahir Atakoğlu, and lyrics written and sung by vocalist Aimée Allen. It is a delicious collaboration.   During this segment, Ms. Allen talks about how Mr. Atakoğlu played the song for her on piano while singing wordless melody. Stunned by its beauty, she agreed to write words that express the profound feeling the melody induces. The subject could only be one thing: love.  Her words are not about romantic love specifically - rather, it is universal love that she wishes to convey to us, the listeners.
