I've said it before: it seems that certain sub genres of jazz come in waves. Like female vocalists. This week we'll sample a few of the best tracks from the recent bounty.

Be sure to tune in to the 9am ET hour to hear all of the vocalists pictured above, during three very appealing sets.

You may have read my recent blog in which I talk about vocalist Jo Harrop. It's fun to play songs from her new release The Heart Wants. She has an earthy, rich tone, and has been compared to Dianne Reeves and Sarah Vaughn. 

Marilyn Scott's new CD is par for the course, which means it is very good. We have a bunch of her CDs here at WICN, and there are excellent songs on each of them. The new one has her signature sound: very smooth, a bit 'wet' (reverb), very modern - an expansive sound. I am partial to her mellow tunes, of which there are several on the new release The Landscape.

Sally Terrell's new CD is called Feel Alive. This release has a nice mix of standards and originals. During the hour we'll hear the standard Some Other Time.

I've been playing the new CD from vocalist Yvonne Flores, called Sheer Bliss. Here is another modern jazz singer, with songs that have elements of pop, R&B, blues, and Latin, all blended nicely with a solid jazz foundation. What a pleasure to play her songs for you.

We just got in the new release from vocalist Beverly Church Hogan, called Sweet Invitation. I am still working my way through this one, and we'll hear Dontcha Go Away Mad, a lively swing number.

Next up, we have the release from Rochester New York's own Nancy Kelly, Jazz Woman: The Reel To Real Sessons. I am disappointed that this release has only two tracks, because both are very good and I want to hear more! Ms. Kelly, if you are reading this, I would like to request that you please send the rest of the CD so I can play some more of your fine tunes.😎

Finally, we have a new release from the San Gabriel Seven, which features Danish vocalist Sinne Eeg (seeneh ee). She is good - very sturdy pipes, with perfect pitch. I will feature her music during an upcoming interview on the Sunday Jazz Brunch.

Discovering these great artists is what makes putting together these shows for you so worthwhile. I hope you find some new artists here, as I did, and that you enjoy the great songs as much as I do.

The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Musician's Corner:  Greg Abate Remembers Phil Woods Air Date: 4/30/2023 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET LISTEN TO THE SEGMENT HERE Bird Lives! That's my first reaction upon hearing a good bebop alto saxophonist. Which is getting harder to do these days. One artist who has kept the bebop tradition alive is Rhode Island's own Greg Abate . Closing in on twenty recordings since his first live date in 1991, Mr. Abate is a prolific exponent of the jazz genre. That's also true for Phil Woods, Mr. Abate's friend, band mate, and sometimes mentor. Mr. Woods, whose discography stretches seeming endlessly, played together with Mr. Abate, and you'll hear them perform Moonlight in Vermont during the Musician's Corner segment that airs between 9:30 - 10am ET on the Sunday Jazz Brunch. The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Musician's Corner: Aimée Allen and Love's Crescendo Air Date: 5/28/2023 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET LISTEN TO THE SEGMENT HERE One song. Two arrangements.  On the next Musician's Corner you'll hear a beautiful, meditative song called Love's Crescendo , with melody written by Turkish jazz artist Fahir Atakoğlu, and lyrics written and sung by vocalist Aimée Allen. It is a delicious collaboration.   During this segment, Ms. Allen talks about how Mr. Atakoğlu played the song for her on piano while singing wordless melody. Stunned by its beauty, she agreed to write words that express the profound feeling the melody induces. The subject could only be one thing: love.  Her words are not about romantic love specifically - rather, it is universal love that she wishes to convey to us, the listeners. While the original version of the song appeared on Mr. Atakoğlu's 2020 CD For Love , Ms. Allen liked it enough to include a slightly new arrangem

The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Best of 2023 Air Date: 1/14/2024 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET It's time to look back at the best jazz releases of 2023. In that year I played approximately 200 new CDs. I suppose it is obvious, but just to be clear, my list represents the best from this group , and excludes CDs that we didn't receive, of which I am sure there are many.
