Chiara Civello

Air Date: 2/6/2022

Back in 2005 we received a CD from Chiara Civello, a recent graduate of the Berklee College of Music in Boston. I thought it was great to have music from what I naively guessed was a hometown artist. As I later learned, Ms. Civello had traveled from Italy for her musical training, and then returned to become a celebrated singer-songwriter in her home country.

But I think it would be more accurate to consider Ms. Civello as an international artist. Here's why: Her music celebrates great songs from countries where jazz is especially popular: U.S., Brazil, Italy, and France.

I like this story from Ms. Civello's recent press release explaining how she became creatively involved with Brazilian jazz:

After landing in Rio to visit her friend Daniel Jobim, Chiara was taken to a musical party (SARAO) where she met a lot of great Brazilian artists playing their songs and exchanging creative ideas. A guitar was going around the room and stopped at Chiara’s place. From that moment on her new phase started. She started writing with and for other artists and explored the beauty and the generosity of the Brazilian music community.

On her prior albums Last Quarter Moon, The Space Between, and Eclipse, you can hear a number of Brazilian songs, all given Ms. Civello's personal touch.

The new project focuses on what the producer Marc Collins refers to as "international songs," which are songs that originated outside the U.S. and whose melodies are well known around the world, with lyrics written in languages other than English. Often such songs are renamed and new lyrics added, all in English, and then they go on to become signatures for famous American artists.

Take the song My Way, for example, which closes down the second hour of this edition of the SJB. This song was originally written as Comme d'Habitude, by the French composers  Claude François and Jacques Revaux. Vocalist Paul Anka wrote new English lyrics, and the rest is history - the song becoming a signature for Frank Sinatra.

On the upcoming show you'll hear three tracks from the new CD, scattered among the first three hours of the show. Enjoy!

This Just In

I have been playing pianist David Janeway's new CD Distant Voices and will explore it further in this show. A fine pianist, Mr. Janeway is also a psychiatrist! I wonder what influence there might be on his music from his day job.

Drummer Matt Gordy's new CD features Jeff Ellwood and Alan Pasqua. We'll hear his version of Sunny with vocalist Sherry Williams. I follow that up with a version of the popular song from Steve Kuhn's 1998 release Love Walked In, featuring Buster Williams. Which version do you like?

I suppose that previewing Matt Gordy's CD made me want to hear just a bit more of Mr. Pasqua, so we have him on solo piano from his 2020 release Day Dream. What a pleasure to hear that delicate touch on the keys that so identifies his sound.

During Brazil/World hour I have two delicious tracks from João Donato, released in 1995. Also of note during the hour are two versions of Antonio Carlos Jobim's Estrada Do Sol, an instrumental and a vocal. I didn't know that there were lyrics to this song, as I have always heard it just on piano. I love having discoveries like this!

Thanks for tuning in to the Sunday Jazz Brunch.
