If you have ever watched a Fellini movie, or any Italian film from the '60s for that matter, you will immediately be drawn into the music of Mafalda Minnozzi as you play the first track from her new album Cinema City - Jazz Scenes From Italian Film. The song, La Dolce Vita, was written by Fellini's favorite composer, Nino Rota; it is the title song to his famous film.

Besides Mr. Rota, several great film composers are represented here. For example, we have several tracks written by Ennio Morricone, the great and quite prolific Italian composer. 

Mr. Morricone wrote the music for most of Sergio Leone's 'spaghetti westerns,' such as A Fistful Of Dollars. In addition, he wrote the scores for such well-known movies as Once Upon A Time In America and Cinema Paradiso. His songs are well-represented in this release.

Metti Una Sera a Cena is a song written by Mr. Morricone, and you'll hear two versions during Brazil/World hour, first from Chiara Civello, and then from Ms. Minnozzi. It's a beautiful song.

Also we have Deborah's Theme, from Once Upon A Time In America. As you know if you have seen this or any of these films, once you hear the melody you will recognize it.

This is an engaging CD that we'll explore during the next few weeks.

New this week are releases from vocalist Nicki Parrott, pianist Dan Siegel, trumpeter Alex Sipiagin, guitarist Perry Smith, vocalist Gemma Sherry, vocalist Nicole Henry, and guitarist Pasquale Grasso.

About Pasquale Grasso: This is a very interesting guitarist. Pat Metheny thought very highly of him, saying "The best guitar player I’ve heard in maybe my entire life is floating around now, Pasquale Grasso."
 
One thing that is very interesting about Mr. Grasso is that, although he is a guitarist, he is often compared to pianists, in particular Bud Powell. You can hear such influences on full display on his website.

The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Musician's Corner: Aimée Allen and Love's Crescendo Air Date: 5/28/2023 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET LISTEN TO THE SEGMENT HERE One song. Two arrangements.  On the next Musician's Corner you'll hear a beautiful, meditative song called Love's Crescendo , with melody written by Turkish jazz artist Fahir Atakoğlu, and lyrics written and sung by vocalist Aimée Allen. It is a delicious collaboration.   During this segment, Ms. Allen talks about how Mr. Atakoğlu played the song for her on piano while singing wordless melody. Stunned by its beauty, she agreed to write words that express the profound feeling the melody induces. The subject could only be one thing: love.  Her words are not about romantic love specifically - rather, it is universal love that she wishes to convey to us, the listeners.
