Guitarists and Female Vocalists

I cannot think of a better way to kick off an hour of great guitarists and female vocalists than with Randy Napoleon. We open with When They Go from his new CD Rust Belt Roots. It swings. And it has that sweet tone that I just love from Mr. Napoleon. An auspicious beginning to a delicious mix of the latest releases from these sub-genres. It begins during the second hour of the show.

Wait until you hear the nice intro, and then a swingin' bass line accompanying Karen Marguth on another pulsating tune for you during the hour, Close Your Eyes from her latest CD Until. Kudos to Dan Feiszli for his bass work. And Ms. Marguth for her singing!

I always thought of Royce Campbell as a protege of Kenny Burrell. But here on Cool School, his latest CD, he sounds more like Wes. Fine with me either way.

The first set ends with Stacey Kent's new CD, and I picked my favorite track here. Then we kick off the next set with the brandest, newest CD of the lot, from Rosana Eckert and her band Brasuka. The CD is heavily Brazilian and Brazilian-influenced, and so we have a track both here and a couple in Brazil/World hour. Based on her prior release, I knew this would be a good one when I got it in a few days ago.

Then we have guitarist Pasquale Grasso. The guy is amazing. There is nothing else to say, just listen.

In terms of style, Nnenna Freelon's new CD Time Traveler could have been released soon after the prior one, which was oh, about eleven years ago. Been a long time! But those familiar with the singer will be pleased to hear her sounding as powerful as ever.

Speaking of powerful singers, don't miss Nicole Henry's version of It's Time for You To Go from her new CD Time to Love Again. The old cliche has always been applicable to this fine singer: she has pipes! I have heard that Ms. Henry is involved in a musical about Whitney Houston. Yes, I could imagine her singing that part.

Check out the rest of the roster for the hour; you'll see some familiar names and some not-so-familiar ones. You'll have a sweet guitar sampling from Greg Skaff, Chris Standring, and Graham Dechter. And Elena Maque, singer and saxophonist, is the new kid on the block.

I felt inspired putting this show together for you. If that comes through in the great jazz, it will be a tasty hour indeed.

The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Musician's Corner: Aimée Allen and Love's Crescendo Air Date: 5/28/2023 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET LISTEN TO THE SEGMENT HERE One song. Two arrangements.  On the next Musician's Corner you'll hear a beautiful, meditative song called Love's Crescendo , with melody written by Turkish jazz artist Fahir Atakoğlu, and lyrics written and sung by vocalist Aimée Allen. It is a delicious collaboration.   During this segment, Ms. Allen talks about how Mr. Atakoğlu played the song for her on piano while singing wordless melody. Stunned by its beauty, she agreed to write words that express the profound feeling the melody induces. The subject could only be one thing: love.  Her words are not about romantic love specifically - rather, it is universal love that she wishes to convey to us, the listeners. While the original version of the song appeared on Mr. Atakoğlu's 2020 CD For Love , Ms. Allen liked it enough to include a slightly new arrangem
