This Is For You, Claudio

I met him only once, and briefly. But I felt like I knew him well,  because we have so many of his CDs here at WICN and I have listened to and enjoyed them all.  

There was something about Mr. Roditi - his warmth and positivity - and it comes through strongly in his music. 

Also, I have a sense that he was beloved not only by many adoring fans, but also his fellow musicians had great respect and love for him. This became clear to me during an interview I had with one of his frequent bandmates, the great harmonica player Hendrik Meurkens. Mr. Meurkens was explaining to me how a group of artists living in New York City had informally gotten together to form a community of samba jazz lovers. Mr. Roditi was one of the leaders of this group. His passing in January 2020 left a big empty hole in the community.

Hour Three is mostly devoted to the music of Claudio Roditi. I know it is a cliche, but it was difficult to winnow down his work to the eight tracks we have here. On the other hand, you could say it is easy to pick eight good songs from a couple of hundred good songs.

What's New?

Some of the new material this week is from guitarist Julian Lage, saxophonist Lena Bloch, pianist and doctor Herb Silverstein, saxophonist Rick Margitza, trumpeter Kerry Moffit, and vocalist Denise Donatelli.

The leaves are finally turning gold and red here in New England, USA. It is very pretty, but I'm not too interested in raking them up. I suppose I could listen to some jazz while I'm doing it.

The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Gabriel Espinosa: From Yucatán to Tarrytown Air Date: 7/7/2024 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET I'm impressed with the lineup of artists appearing at Mark Morganelli's Jazz Forum in Tarrytown, New York. Four or five names pop up on Wikipedia, mostly violin players who also happen to occasionally play viola.
