Here are the top three reasons that I like Stacey Kent:
  1. Her voice

Did I mention that she has a great voice? 😉
 
So what do I mean here? Does she belt out songs with soaring high notes and overpowering technique? Well, she can probably do that, but that's not what I'm talking about. 
 
I think it is more about precision and subtlety. When I hear one of her tracks, her sound is immediately recognizable: the voice is smooth and effortless, with just the right amount of low midrange that makes her sound so relaxing. 
 
Let me amend the above list, now that I think of it. There are a few other things that I do really like about Ms. Kent's releases. For one, I find that the engineering is always noteworthy. Many people don't notice this aspect of a recording, but it is important to me, as one of many factors that make a successful audio release. True, most recordings these days are fairly high quality. However, there are variations and careful listening will reveal superior recordings. Audio engineers are human and must make decisions that impact the final sound.
 
Another thing I like about her CDs are the arrangements. They are superb. Her previous CD I Know I Dream featured a full orchestra, whereas the latest one features only the talented Art Hirahara on piano. The sound is delicious in both cases.
 
Her new CD Songs From Other Places continues Ms. Kent's typical format: A mix of languages (mostly French and Portuguese besides English), a relatively eclectic selection of material drawn from the American and world jazz as well as an occasional jazzified pop song. She is heavily influenced by and usually features several Brazilian jazz songs on her releases.

The Sunday Jazz Brunch has become pretty much a show that is all about new jazz. There is so much of it that I am having fewer and fewer opportunities to go back in time, as I have always done on occasion for various reasons.

The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Musician's Corner: Aimée Allen and Love's Crescendo Air Date: 5/28/2023 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET LISTEN TO THE SEGMENT HERE One song. Two arrangements.  On the next Musician's Corner you'll hear a beautiful, meditative song called Love's Crescendo , with melody written by Turkish jazz artist Fahir Atakoğlu, and lyrics written and sung by vocalist Aimée Allen. It is a delicious collaboration.   During this segment, Ms. Allen talks about how Mr. Atakoğlu played the song for her on piano while singing wordless melody. Stunned by its beauty, she agreed to write words that express the profound feeling the melody induces. The subject could only be one thing: love.  Her words are not about romantic love specifically - rather, it is universal love that she wishes to convey to us, the listeners. The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Best of 2023 Air Date: 1/14/2024 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET It's time to look back at the best jazz releases of 2023. In that year I played approximately 200 new CDs. I suppose it is obvious, but just to be clear, my list represents the best from this group , and excludes CDs that we didn't receive, of which I am sure there are many.
