The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Gabriel Espinosa: From Yucatán to Tarrytown Air Date: 7/7/2024 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET I'm impressed with the lineup of artists appearing at Mark Morganelli's Jazz Forum in Tarrytown, New York. Recently Gabriel Espinosa performed with his superb band. In the photo above, we see Mr. Espinosa feeling the bass, with drummer Graciliano Zambonin reacting to the groove of the moment. Misha Tsiganov Also featured in the group was the very talented Misha Tsiganov on piano, as well as Aviana Gedler vocals and violin, and Alexandra Ridout trumpet and flugelhorn. Aviana Gedler Alexandra Ridout Not only was the music simply great to listen and groove to, but Mr. Espinosa's talk about the songs made it very interesting. There was music from Brazil, as well as music from Mr. Espinosa's home, Yucatán Mexico. In addition, we heard a Cuban Bolero, a Spanish folk tune, and even a Latin version of the Carpenters' Close to You . There is nothing like im

The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Best of 2023 Air Date: 1/14/2024 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET It's time to look back at the best jazz releases of 2023. In that year I played approximately 200 new CDs. I suppose it is obvious, but just to be clear, my list represents the best from this group , and excludes CDs that we didn't receive, of which I am sure there are many. You might like to take a look at a prior 'best of' show where I laid out my philosophy (if I may use so grand a term!) behind this list. Don't miss this show. As a jazz lover, you owe it to yourself to hear the best of the latest material. Tune in Sunday 8:00AM ET to hear the best jazz of 2023. And now for our annual tradition. I present to you, in play order, the Sunday Jazz Brunch Best of 2023 . 〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰 Sam Taylor: Let Go Saxophonist with big Ben-Webster-type sound. Darmon Meader: Losing My Mind Singer/instrumentalist from New York Voices in solo project. See previous blog . Debut: J
The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Muscian's Corner: Debbie Spring Air Date: 11/19/2023 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET CLICK HERE TO LISTEN Do an internet search for 'jazz viola' and you won't get very much. Four or five names pop up on Wikipedia, mostly violin players who also happen to occasionally play viola. Add to this, over the many thousands of CDs I have listened to during my tenure at WICN, I do not recall ever coming across a jazz viola player. Until now. Miami's Debbie Spring joins me on this edition of the Sunday Jazz Brunch to talk about the viola in jazz as well as her new CD, Tocamos . You'll hear all about her instrument. And not only is the instrument itself unusual and unique in jazz, but additionally, it is unique even among violas. This is because it has five strings, whereas a typical viola has only four. Tune in at 10am ET to hear this edition of Musician's Corner. What you'll hear when we play the songs from the CD is a beautifully wa
