The Organ Trio

The Hammond B3 organ was invented and manufactured by Laurens Hammond and John M. Hanert in 1935. By producing its sound using electricity instead of air, it was sold as a low-cost alternative for churches needing to purchase an organ.

One of the early exponents of this new instrument was pioneering organ player Wild Bill Davis. In his view, the powerful sound of the B3 in trio format with guitar and drums could replace a big band, at much lower cost to the club owner. It was 1949. The organ trio was born.

Just a few years later, in 1956, Jimmy Smith burst onto the scene, becoming the most influential jazz organ player on the B3. Other jazz artists, and especially R&B and nascent rock n' roll influencers, began to take notice.

My journey with the B3 begins with the 1959 release by Mel Rhyne, Paul Parker, and the great Wes Montgomery, titled The Wes Mongomery Trio. This is the trio that I listened to day and night for many weeks while I absorbed not just the amazing guitar playing, but also the new-to-my-ears sound of the B3 paired with guitar. In jazz, all B3 trios can be compared to this one.

Some well-known B3 artists of today include Pat Bianchi, Joey DeFrancesco, and Dr. Lonnie Smith. 

Sunday's show opens with a new entry in the list, Kendall Carter. On his new CD he has Dave Stryker fulfilling duties on guitar and Kenny Phelps on the drums. 

In addition to Kendall Carter, we also have a new release from Tony Monaco, Strollin', which I have been playing for the past few weeks. Mr. Monaco's release features Hendrik Meurkens on harmonica.

The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Gabriel Espinosa: From Yucatán to Tarrytown Air Date: 7/7/2024 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET I'm impressed with the lineup of artists appearing at Mark Morganelli's Jazz Forum in Tarrytown, New York. Four or five names pop up on Wikipedia, mostly violin players who also happen to occasionally play viola.
