Upon first listening to and thoroughly enjoying vocalist Rebecca Kilgore's new CD, Trio Volume 1, I knew something was special about this ensemble. What could it be?

Putting aside Ms. Kilgore's fine vocal work, and the obvious talent of the players - Randy Porter on piano, Tom Wakeling on bass - I have decided that the special feeling arises in part from what is missing.

First, there is no drummer. So I have to say that when I read the title with the word 'trio' in there, I reflexively assumed that the trio referred to the piano trio backing her up. But there is no piano trio; rather, it is voice that is the member of the trio, rather than skins. Most of the time I would miss a drummer, but here it does not seem necessary to have one.

Second, and I only notice this due to hearing singer friends talk about it, is the fact that this is a 'dry' recording. There is no reverb/echo as is typical with many or most vocalists, who seem to like varying degrees of the effect. Typically, it does provide enhancement, but not always.

And the result? In one word: refreshing. Combine the natural feeling that flows from this performance, due in part to the above mentioned characteristics, with a selection of delicious songs and a very capable singer with superb backup, and you have a terrific jazz release.

This week you'll hear two tracks from this CD, and in the coming weeks you'll hear more. 

Grooving to the 70s and 80s

It seems that when you hear jazz on the radio or streaming on the computer, in most cases you are either listening to recent jazz, or old jazz from the '40s and '50s, sometimes a little earlier or later. Somehow the decades of the 70s and 80s, as well as the 90s perhaps, seem to be overlooked.

At the end of groove hour I feature a few tracks from artists who exemplified the era: George Benson, Michael Franks, Basia. I get warm and fuzzy feelings when I hear this music from my early life.

The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Musician's Corner: Aimée Allen and Love's Crescendo Air Date: 5/28/2023 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET LISTEN TO THE SEGMENT HERE One song. Two arrangements.  On the next Musician's Corner you'll hear a beautiful, meditative song called Love's Crescendo , with melody written by Turkish jazz artist Fahir Atakoğlu, and lyrics written and sung by vocalist Aimée Allen. It is a delicious collaboration.   During this segment, Ms. Allen talks about how Mr. Atakoğlu played the song for her on piano while singing wordless melody. Stunned by its beauty, she agreed to write words that express the profound feeling the melody induces. The subject could only be one thing: love.  Her words are not about romantic love specifically - rather, it is universal love that she wishes to convey to us, the listeners.
