There just aren't very many women playing jazz guitar professionally. The first name that comes to my mind is Emily Remler, who passed in 1990. Today we have Joyce Cooling, and beyond that - well, nobody else comes to mind. But now we have Jocelyn Gould.

Ms. Gould is quite accomplished. Play the video above to hear her elegant take on I Concentrate On You. More than that, she is a leader and mentor as head of the Guitar Department at Humber College in Toronto, Canada. Check out this interview, where she talks extensively about her role in jazz education.

She has recorded with Michael Dease, Diego Rivera and Randy Napoleon, the latter being her own mentor. You may have heard these artists on the Sunday Jazz Brunch. Randy Napoleon appears on the new CD from Jack Brandfeld that I have been playing lately. Also you can hear a track from Diego Rivera's new release Indigenous toward the end of hour two. Finally, drummer Quincy Davis appears with Ms. Gould on her new album, and I've been playing tracks from his own new release Q Vision.

The new album is called Elegant Traveler, and it is her debut as a leader. During hour one you'll hear It Might as Well Be Spring, and then during hour two we have A Fleeting Moment, one of her seven original tunes on the release.

More New and Interesting Jazz

New this week is a solo recording by the talented Brazilian guitarist Ricardo Silveira. I am planning to showcase him along with some other Brazilian guitarists next week; stay tuned for that!

Also I would like to point out the new release from trumpeter John Daversa and his Jazz Orchestra. This is an exciting and creative jazz work featuring splendid arrangements that include orchestra. The sound is a marvelous integration of jazz and symphonic sound. Check it out during hour one.

Also we have the new release from Hammond B-3 artist Tony Monaco, which features Hendrik Meurkens. It kicks off Brazil/World hour.

One last thing. I really like the title of guitarist Chris Standring's track during Groove Hour, This Mess is a Place. There's always room for some humor in song titles.

The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Musician's Corner: Aimée Allen and Love's Crescendo Air Date: 5/28/2023 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET LISTEN TO THE SEGMENT HERE One song. Two arrangements.  On the next Musician's Corner you'll hear a beautiful, meditative song called Love's Crescendo , with melody written by Turkish jazz artist Fahir Atakoğlu, and lyrics written and sung by vocalist Aimée Allen. It is a delicious collaboration.   During this segment, Ms. Allen talks about how Mr. Atakoğlu played the song for her on piano while singing wordless melody. Stunned by its beauty, she agreed to write words that express the profound feeling the melody induces. The subject could only be one thing: love.  Her words are not about romantic love specifically - rather, it is universal love that she wishes to convey to us, the listeners. The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Best of 2023 Air Date: 1/14/2024 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET It's time to look back at the best jazz releases of 2023. In that year I played approximately 200 new CDs. I suppose it is obvious, but just to be clear, my list represents the best from this group , and excludes CDs that we didn't receive, of which I am sure there are many.
