Jeff Ellwood Talks About his Debut CD

Air Date: 12/13/2020

Note: Listen to the interview here.

I often have wondered what it would be like, and if it would be feasible, to hang with an accomplished jazz artist for a big chunk of the show, and talk about the songs. Often when I hear a song I like, I have a feeling that I'd enjoy it even more if I could ask the artist a few questions and then get some 'insider' information about the song. Questions like "Why did you pick that song for the CD title?" and "What brought these particular musicians together for this gig?" So that when I hear the song, I can appreciate it just a bit more.

Well, that's what we have on the upcoming edition of the Sunday Jazz Brunch. Jeff Ellwood joins me to talk about his new CD The Sounds Around the House

I didn't have to listen long to understand that this is a top-quality CD that fits perfectly into the first two hours of the SJB. Tune in Sunday to hear what I mean.

Mr. Ellwood studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston and now  serves as Director of Jazz Studies at Mt. San Antonio College as well as Adjunct Professor of Saxophone at Cal State University Fullerton. Based in the Los Angeles area, you could consider him to be a 'West Coast Jazz' artist, but I'm not sure if there is such a thing anymore. That's a topic for another day.

When you listen to the show on Sunday, you might be curled up with a hot cup of java or hot chocolate and the Sunday paper on a chilly morning. If so, then you'll dig the vibe - from the music, of course, but also from the relaxing sound of Jeff's voice as he talks about each of the five songs you'll hear from the new CD.

For example, one of the songs is entitled "For Roger." I see song titles like this all the time. Typically, I don't ever find out anything about the person who is the subject of the song. But on Sunday you will hear Jeff give us an illuminating and emotional description of how the song and the CD came to be, who Roger is, and why the song is dedicated to him.

I have once said that I feel like what I do here is a bit like what a jeweler does: setting gems together to make composite pieces like bracelets and necklaces. Except I string together songs for you. So on Sunday you'll hear these Jeff Ellwood moments surrounded by gems from other artists, making for a whole that is entirely satisfying.

Don't forget that you can always listen to the show for two weeks after it airs! Click the link on my main page to go to the archive.

To your health.

Marty
