I Hate Summer

Air Date: 11/22/2020

No, not me personally! Although a couple of sheep do appear to be looking at me in puzzlement.

It was the original title of a song written in 1960 by Bruno Martino (melody) and Bruno Brighetti (lyrics), in Italian as "Odio l'estate." The song was not very popular at first, and then the title was ridiculed on Italian television. So it was then changed to simply "Estate" (pronounced ess-tah-tay).

The song is about summer love lost. That explains it!

In this week's installment of the Sunday Jazz Brunch, I thought the lyrics good enough to read to you. Also I thought it would be fun to contrast two different versions of the song.

Tune in a bit after 10am ET during Brazil/World Jazz hour to hear Josie Falbo's take on this song, from her new CD You Must Believe in Spring

The reading follows this track, using as a beautiful music bed the opening instrumental from João Gilberto's 1976 release Amoroso, Brazil. This is the version that really made the song popular.

Mr. Gilberto, who died a few years ago at the age of 88 and was a major player in the development of bossa nova, sings it in the original Italian, although it has been translated into many languages, including Portuguese.

Both versions have their own unique sound and feel. Ms. Falbo begins with a gentle, intimate vibe, but then the song becomes more urgent, almost desperate - an appropriate response for one who has lost love. João Gilberto, on the other hand, takes a quieter approach, one of sadness and contemplation, another appropriate response.

Although both versions use string orchestra, it is used in different ways. You'll notice much more force in the version by Ms. Falbo, whereas the orchestra in Mr. Gilberto's version is more for color, and it generally stays in the background.

I saw an opinion piece on the web where the author complained that artists don't know how to interpret this song. Maybe. But these two versions are legitimate, and once you read and listen to the lyrics and then the tracks, you can decide for yourself.

Oh, so you want to read the lyrics now? 😎

Estate (Summer)

You are warm like the kisses I have lost
You’re full of a love that has passed
That my heart would wish to erase

Summer
The sun that warmed us each day
What splendid sunsets it painted
Now burns only with fury

Another winter will return
And the roses shed a thousand petals
The snow will cover everything
And perhaps a little peace will return.

Summer
Which imparted perfume to each flower
The summer that created our love
To make me then die of grief
Summer

Another treat during Brazil/World hour is a different song contrast, repeated from a recent show. We hear Susan Pereira and then Antonio Adolfo, each with their own version of Milton Nascimento's Nada Sera Como Ante. Having the two perspectives on the same song can deepen your appreciation.

About the rest of the show:

I haven't played Gail Pettis in awhile; a shame, since her voice is as smooth as silk. Rick Gallagher's original My Heart Is With You is an inspirational number that I'm sure you'll enjoy.  Lolly Allen's CD Coming Home came out a few months ago and we hear Johnny Mandel's Emily played on the vibraphones. Speaking of summer, Karin Plato's Sweet Summer is a very pretty song, and makes me think I should do a tribute to the warm season someday. All of these songs can be enjoyed during your Contemplative Morning.

For new material we have a CD just in from Art Bergeron. Also, Candelight Love in the Time of Cholera is a new release from pianist Pete Malinverni in duet with violinist Julie Kurtzman. I've got another track from Paulette McWilliams' excellent new release A Woman's Story.

Groove hour is loaded with new music. The hour ends with a great duet between singer Vanessa Fernandez and guitarist Steve Wright that I have enjoyed since it came out in 2006. I believe this CD, titled Unsung, should have gotten more attention.

Thanks for listening! I hope you and yours are safe and healthy.

Marty
