Notes for the Sunday Jazz Brunch Radio Show

I recall hearing Pat Metheny play his original Always and Forever on the 1992 release Secret Story. The instrumental on that CD is a serene contemplative number. 
 
In the voice and hands of Mon David and Josh Nelson, the song remains mellow, except that when you hear Mon sing, you are struck by his forceful emotion. And so his version, with his own lyrics, has all the beauty of the original, but also has a power unique to the singer.
 
The new CD entitled D+N+A has a really nice mix of older standard material along with newer compositions, such as John Lennon’s Imagine as well as a tribute/medley for Bill Evans. 
 
I’m not sure if the letters D N A are meant to indicate anything beyond the idea that David and Nelson do indeed find agreement on these twelve songs. I like to think it does, based on the interesting cover art. Maybe one could say that playing wonderful jazz resides in the DNA of these two fine artists.
 
Our new music bin is overflowing here at WICN, and I’m really glad about that. New to the Sunday Jazz Brunch are tracks from Lafayette Gilchrist, Jorge Garcia, SaltmanKnowles, Snorre Kirk Artist Page, Michael Landin, Andy Snitzer, and Jarrod Lawson. 
 
We continue exploring the new CD from Gregory Porter. I am not at all surprised at the response to this CD. Many newcomers to his music are simply blown away, and that is reflected in the email and texts that I have received. Plenty more GP in this edition of the SJB!
 
You’ll also hear great songs from the current crop of new releases from Kandace Springs, Orice Jenkins, Chico Pinheiro, Dan Costa, Eddie Daniels, Antonio Adolfo, Graciliano Zambonin, Al Daniels, John Fedchock, and Paulette McWilliams Music.
 
Groove hour features new and recent material from NAJEE The Official Page and Euge Groove. I am very impressed with the fine guitar work from Norman Brown on his new CD Heart to Heart.

The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Musician's Corner:  Greg Abate Remembers Phil Woods Air Date: 4/30/2023 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET LISTEN TO THE SEGMENT HERE Bird Lives! That's my first reaction upon hearing a good bebop alto saxophonist. Which is getting harder to do these days. One artist who has kept the bebop tradition alive is Rhode Island's own Greg Abate . Closing in on twenty recordings since his first live date in 1991, Mr. Abate is a prolific exponent of the jazz genre. That's also true for Phil Woods, Mr. Abate's friend, band mate, and sometimes mentor. The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Musician's Corner: Aimée Allen and Love's Crescendo Air Date: 5/28/2023 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET LISTEN TO THE SEGMENT HERE One song. Two arrangements.  On the next Musician's Corner you'll hear a beautiful, meditative song called Love's Crescendo , with melody written by Turkish jazz artist Fahir Atakoğlu, and lyrics written and sung by vocalist Aimée Allen. It is a delicious collaboration.   During this segment, Ms. Allen talks about how Mr. Atakoğlu played the song for her on piano while singing wordless melody. Stunned by its beauty, she agreed to write words that express the profound feeling the melody induces. The subject could only be one thing: love.  Her words are not about romantic love specifically - rather, it is universal love that she wishes to convey to us, the listeners. While the original version of the song appeared on Mr. Atakoğlu's 2020 CD For Love , Ms. Allen liked it enough to include a slightly new arrangem
