The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Gabriel Espinosa: From Yucatán to Tarrytown Air Date: 7/7/2024 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET I'm impressed with the lineup of artists appearing at Mark Morganelli's Jazz Forum in Tarrytown, New York. Recently Gabriel Espinosa performed with his superb band. In the photo above, we see Mr. Espinosa feeling the bass, with drummer Graciliano Zambonin reacting to the groove of the moment. Misha Tsiganov Also featured in the group was the very talented Misha Tsiganov on piano, as well as Aviana Gedler vocals and violin, and Alexandra Ridout trumpet and flugelhorn. The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Musician's Corner: Lori Bell Air Date: 6/2/2024 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET LISTEN TO THE SEGMENT HERE She was nominated for a Grammy in 1983 for Best New Artist, and again in 2002 for her self-titled CD released on the Beeswax label. It is with the latter CD, Lori Bell , that this story begins, for me anyway. That's the first CD from the artist that entered our library, and the first music that I heard. Wow! Honestly, I had never heard flute playing like that, so smooth and mellifluous,  the band exceedingly tight, the sound engineering excellent. The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Behn Gillece Air Date: 5/26/2024 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET I recall during a show years ago when a local musician friend of mine (pianist Lou Terriociano for those in the Worcester, MA area) called to ask me to play some vibes music. He was a bit upset that he didn't hear enough of the instrument on the airwaves. It was easy for me to oblige, as there have always been a number of superb jazz vibes players throughout the years. Like Gary Burton, Milt Jackson, Lionel Hampton, Bobby Hutcherson, Joe Locke, and Warren Wolfe, for example. Add Behn Gillece to that list. Mr. Gillece has just released his seventh album as a leader, Stick Together.   Featured are pianist Art Hirahara, bassist Boris Kozlov and drummer Rudy Royston. "The album title, Stick Together, embodies a dual meaning," says Mr. Gillece. The Sunday Jazz Brunch Presents Jacky Terrasson Air Date: 5/19/2024 on 90.5 WICN 8am-12pm ET Here's a pianist and his trio whose material I always eagerly await: Jacky Terrasson. The last release was in 2019, the album 53 . So it's been five years, and now we have his new CD Moving On . Here are my main takeaways for this artist.  First, he almost always has at least one track that really stands out on any particular release, for me, anyway. To mention a couple, I'd say Baby Plum from his 1995 release Reach is one, and The Dolphin from his 2002 release Smile is another. Second, when he records with vocalists, they are usually pretty interesting ones. For example, his work with Cassandra Wilson on the 1997 CD Rendevous was actually where I first heard the dark voice of Ms. Wilson.  Another CD in this category would be the 2005 tribute to Burt Bachrach and Hal David, Close To You, with relatively unknown, but quite talented, vocalist Rigmor Gustafsson.
